Tasting notes

This is unoaked Chardonnay at its most transparent — lemon zest, grapefruit pith, and orange blossom with a clean mineral finish driven by the clay-limestone soils of Chaintré. Eight months on fine lees gives it enough roundness to stay interesting without losing its citrus-forward snap.

Le Clos is a single, walled-in parcel of Chardonnay planted on clay and limestone soils in Chaintré, the southernmost village of the Mâconnais. The vines sit on a gentle east-facing slope between 180 and 218 meters above sea level, where Quaternary-period clay mixed with pebbly scree from the erosion of Bajocian hillside provides good drainage without sacrificing depth. At the time of this 2016 vintage, the vines were approximately 20 years old.

Grapes are harvested by hand, pressed pneumatically, and fermented slowly at controlled temperatures in the underground cellars at Solutré-Pouilly. Fermentation occurs without chaptalization. The wine then ages in stainless steel on its fine lees for eight months before a light filtration at bottling. No sulfites are added.

The result is an unoaked Chardonnay with citrus-forward aromatics — lemon, orange, and grapefruit — supported by fruit blossom notes and a minerally finish. The absence of oak keeps the wine precise and direct; the eight months on lees adds texture without weight.

Domaine Cheveau farms organically and vinifies each parcel separately. This cuvée represents the entry point of their Mâconnais range and consistently delivers clean, citrus-driven Chardonnay at Mâcon-Chaintré appellation level.

Works well with shellfish — oysters, steamed mussels, or grilled prawns — where the citrus acidity cuts through brine. Also solid with goat cheese, leek tarts, or a simple roast chicken with herbs. The lees texture gives it enough body to handle a cream-based fish dish without being overwhelmed.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Domaine Cheveau

Domaine Cheveau was founded in 1950 by André Cheveau and his wife Marcelle in the hamlet of Solutré-Pouilly, in the heart of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. André's son Michel joined the estate in the 1970s, and since 1999 the domaine has been managed by Michel's sons Nicolas and Julien, along with Nicolas's wife Aurélie. The estate has grown from 11 to approximately 20 hectares over the past two decades.

Vineyard holdings are concentrated in and around Solutré-Pouilly, with additional parcels in Davayé in the Mâconnais and Saint-Amour in Beaujolais. Chardonnay vines grow on clay-limestone soils typical of the appellation; Gamay in Saint-Amour grows primarily on sand, schist, and granite. The domaine farms according to organic principles and biodynamic concepts, with organic certification confirmed as of the 2024 vintage. Soils are regularly ploughed and yields are limited.

All harvesting is done by hand. In the winery, grapes are pneumatically pressed whole-cluster and each parcel is fermented separately using native yeasts, with no chaptalization. Depending on the site, fermentation and aging occurs in stainless steel, demi-muids, or larger barrels. For Le Clos Mâcon-Chaintré, fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures in the underground cellars at Solutré-Pouilly, followed by eight months of aging in stainless steel on fine lees and a light filtration at bottling. No sulfites are added to this cuvée.

Wine region

Mâconnais, France

The Mâconnais is the southernmost sub-region of Burgundy, located between the Côte Chalonnaise to the north and Beaujolais to the south. The vineyards cover rolling hills along a strip roughly 50 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide, west of the Saône River. The climate is temperate oceanic with a continental tendency — warmer and drier than the Côte d'Or, with warm summers and a risk of spring frosts. This extra warmth allows Chardonnay to ripen earlier and reach higher sugar levels, while limestone soils and elevation maintain freshness and acidity.

The region produces predominantly white wine from Chardonnay across several appellations: Mâcon, Mâcon-Villages, village-specific Mâcon designations (such as Mâcon-Chaintré), Viré-Clessé, Saint-Véran, and Pouilly-Fuissé. Soils range from clay-limestone in the best sites to sandier granite and volcanic substrates toward the Beaujolais border. Chaintré sits at the southern tip of the Mâconnais hills, sharing the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation boundary to the west. Its vines grow on a gentle east-facing slope at 180–218 meters, on Quaternary clay mixed with pebbly scree eroded from Bajocian limestone hillsides. In 2020, Pouilly-Fuissé became the first Mâconnais appellation to receive Premier Cru status, with 22 specific vineyard sites recognized — a milestone that elevated the region's profile for serious, age-worthy white Burgundy.
