Tasting notes

This wine hits the full Kakhetian amber profile: dried apricot, clove, black tea, and orange zest layered over firm, qvevri-derived tannins. It's dense and textural without losing the variety's natural freshness. Tamuna's no-additive approach makes it one of the more honest expressions of Kakhuri Mtsvane available.

Kortavebis Marani's Kakhuri Mtsvane is a 100% skin-contact amber wine from the 2019 vintage, made by Tamuna Bidzinashvili at her small winery in the village of Gremi, Kvareli Municipality, in Kakheti, eastern Georgia. The wine is fermented and aged in qvevri — traditional Georgian clay amphorae buried underground — with white grape skins, pips, and stems included throughout. Total added sulfites are 40 mg/L.

Kakhuri Mtsvane (literally 'green from Kakheti') is an aromatic white variety that maintains sharp acidity even at higher sugar levels. In qvevri with full skin maceration, it produces a structured amber wine with pronounced tannins and deep amber color. The Kakhetian style involves fermenting grape skins and ripe stems together inside the qvevri, yielding more extract and grip than the partial-skin Kartlian approach.

Tamuna farms her 2.5-hectare vineyard organically, with soils of red clay and white stones. No additives are used in the cellar, and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered. The winery's 35-variety planting functions as a living library of Georgian indigenous grapes, and Kakhuri Mtsvane is one of its core single-varietal bottlings.

Pair with roasted or braised poultry, walnut-based Georgian sauces like satsivi, or aged hard cheeses. The firm tannins and dried-fruit character also hold up well against spiced lamb dishes or fatty charcuterie. Serve at 55-60F to keep the acidity lively without amplifying tannin.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Kortavebis Marani

Tamuna Bidzinashvili established Kortavebis Marani in 2014 in the village of Gremi, Kvareli Municipality, Kakheti, situated in the Alazani River Valley at the foot of the Caucasus foothills. She planted a 2.5-hectare vineyard with 35 indigenous Georgian grape varieties as a varietal library, while sourcing fruit from local growers in the early years. By 2019, over 60% of the grapes used in production came from the estate.

Tamuna farms the vineyard organically. Soils at Gremi are predominantly red clay with white stones. No synthetic treatments are used in the vineyard or cellar.

All white wines at Kortavebis Marani are macerated on skins, pips, and stems, with fermentation and aging conducted entirely in qvevri. No additives or fining agents are used, and wines are bottled with minimal added sulfites. The winery produces single-varietal bottlings of its key grapes — including Kakhuri Mtsvane, Rkatsiteli, Kisi, Khikhvi, and Saperavi — as well as field-blend wines from the full 35-variety planting.

Wine region

Kakheti, Georgia

Kakheti occupies eastern Georgia between the Greater Caucasus Mountains to the north and Azerbaijan to the east. Vineyards in the Alazani River Valley grow at elevations of roughly 250 to 800 meters, with the Kvareli subzone sitting at 350 to 550 meters on the cooler northern left bank of the Alazani. The climate is continental: warm, dry summers moderated by mountain breezes, cold winters, and rainfall of approximately 400 to 600mm concentrated in spring and autumn. The Likhi Ridge blocks moist air from western Georgia, keeping Kakheti significantly drier than western regions.

Kakheti accounts for roughly 77% of Georgia's vineyard area and is home to 20 of Georgia's 29 PDO appellations, including Tsinandali, Mukuzani, Kindzmarauli, Napareuli, and Kvareli. Soils vary from alluvial valley floors to cinnamonic (sandy, reddish, iron-rich calcareous clay) on mid-slopes, with chernozem and forest soils at higher elevations. The region's signature grapes include Rkatsiteli and Saperavi for the bulk of production, with Kakhuri Mtsvane, Kisi, and Khikhvi among the more prized aromatic white varieties. In 2013, UNESCO inscribed the traditional Georgian qvevri winemaking method on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
