Tasting notes

The 2020 Jeanne D'Arc is softer and less aggressive than most orange wines, but not timid: lemon curd, dried thyme, and pithy white peach with real tannic grip from six-plus days on the skins. The 8% skin-fermented Sauvignon Blanc from Dry Creek Valley adds a savory, herbal edge that keeps the Chenin's stone fruit in check.

Folk Machine Jeanne D'Arc is a skin-contact wine made primarily from Chenin Blanc grown on Merritt Island in the Sacramento River Delta, within the Clarksburg AVA. The 2020 vintage also incorporates approximately 8% skin-fermented Sauvignon Blanc sourced from a vineyard in Dry Creek Valley, northwest of Healdsburg. The grapes are sustainably farmed on the sandy loam soils of Merritt Island, where fog and cool delta breezes from San Francisco Bay moderate the warm Sacramento Valley climate.

Winemaker Kenny Likitprakong destemmed the fruit into an open-top fermenter without chilling or inoculation. Native fermentation began naturally after about six days on the skins. Once dry, the juice was pressed off to neutral French barrels, where malolactic fermentation proceeded naturally to completion. No sulfur dioxide was added post-fermentation; a small addition was made only at bottling. The wine is unfiltered and unfined, with noticeable haze and sediment.

The 2020 shows more tannin and bitterness than the 2019 vintage, consistent with the extended skin contact and the inclusion of skin-fermented Sauvignon Blanc. The color is a faded gold. On the palate it is savory and textural, with pithy citrus, lemon curd, dried herb, and a light peach character underpinned by gentle grip from the skins. Acidity is firm and persistent.

Jeanne D'Arc is named as a nod to the Chenin Blanc grape's Loire Valley roots, where Joan of Arc is historically tied. The Folk Machine label, launched in 2005 under the Hobo Wine Company umbrella, is Kenny's home for smaller-production, more esoteric bottlings from across California.

This wine's tangy acidity and light tannins work well with rich seafood: think butter-poached halibut, crab bisque, or shrimp scampi. The savory, herbal quality also makes it a natural match for soft-ripened cheeses, roast chicken with herbs, or pasta in a light cream sauce. Serve slightly chilled, around 50-54F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Hobo Wine Company

Kenny Likitprakong founded Hobo Wine Company in 2002 in Santa Rosa, California. He grew up at Domain Saint George, where his father Somchai worked as general manager since 1972. After studying at UC Davis and working his first winemaking job in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1999, Kenny started Hobo with no vineyard ownership, sourcing instead from growers he built long-term relationships with across California. The name Hobo reflects that itinerant sourcing model. The winery has been based in Santa Rosa's Roseland neighborhood since 2013.

Hobo Wine Company works with 42 vineyards across 14 or more AVAs, spanning 240 miles from Arroyo Seco in the south to Redwood Valley in the north. Nearly all leased vineyards are organically farmed, and 88% of all sourced vineyards are farmed sustainably, organically, or biodynamically. The winery itself is CCOF Certified Organic, a designation that began appearing on labels with the 2021 vintage. Hobo is also a member of 1% for the Planet, donating 1% of gross sales to environmental nonprofits.

Folk Machine was launched in 2005 as a home for more affordable Pinot Noir, and has since evolved into the label for smaller-production, more experimental bottlings across California. All Folk Machine wines use native yeasts and native malolactic bacteria, with no commercial fermentation aids or additives. The Jeanne D'Arc orange wine has been produced since the wine's first vintage and is now in its eleventh edition with the 2020 release. Winemaking across the lineup emphasizes low intervention: no inoculation, no fining, no filtration, and minimal to no added sulfur.

Wine region

California, USA

The Clarksburg AVA sits within the Sacramento River Delta, spanning portions of Sacramento, Yolo, and Solano counties. Established as an AVA in 1984, the region is defined by flat terrain and fertile alluvial soils composed of clay, silt, and loam. Merritt Island, a 5,000-acre sub-appellation within Clarksburg established in 1983, sits directly on the Sacramento River and is characterized by Columbian Sandy Loam deposited from Coast Range runoff. Cool fog and breezes from San Francisco Bay funnel up the delta, moderating temperatures significantly compared to neighboring Sacramento and keeping the growing season long.

Clarksburg is best known for Chenin Blanc, which performs exceptionally well in the region's cool-climate, alluvial conditions, retaining firm acidity even in warm years. Merritt Island has historically been the principle Chenin Blanc site within Clarksburg, with commercial grape growing there dating to 1969. While Chardonnay occupies the most total acreage in the broader AVA, Chenin Blanc is the variety most associated with Clarksburg's identity, and a Clarksburg Chenin Blanc won medals at four major competitions as early as 1981.
