Tasting notes

This wine delivers the Atlantic character of Óbidos in a direct, unmanipulated form — bright lemon-lime acidity, a saline mineral note, and ripe orchard fruit with no cosmetic additions. The 10-month barrel aging on native yeasts adds subtle texture without softening the wine's inherent freshness.

Humus White LB19 is a still white wine from Encosta da Quinta's Quinta do Paço estate in Alvorninha, within the Óbidos DOC of the wider Lisboa wine region. The grapes — primarily Arinto and Fernão Pires — are grown on certified organic calcareous clay and limestone soils at 150 to 200 meters elevation, where Atlantic breezes from the nearby coast keep temperatures moderate and preserve high natural acidity through a long ripening season.

In the cellar, Rodrigo Filipe uses whole-cluster direct press and spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in old oak barrels. The wine ages for approximately 10 months before bottling with no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites. The LB designation refers to the estate's own white lot, distinguishing it from the Flui bottling, which sources from an outside vineyard planted in 1974.

The result is a dry, savory white with bright citrus acidity, orchard fruit character, and a mineral edge driven by the calcareous soils. At roughly 12% ABV, it sits on the lighter side of the spectrum — refreshing and food-friendly rather than weighty or extracted.

A natural with grilled sea bass, salt cod preparations, or linguiça and vegetable rice dishes. The bright acidity also cuts through fried foods well — think grilled sardines with crusty bread. Drinks well alongside mild fresh cheeses from the Óbidos region.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Encosta da Quinta

Encosta da Quinta is a family estate operating under the Humus wine label at Quinta do Paço in Alvorninha, a village within the Óbidos wine region of Portugal. The property was acquired by Rodrigo Filipe's grandfather in 1960. His father planted the first vines on the estate's slopes in the 1990s. Rodrigo Filipe, a former civil engineer, left that career in the early 2000s to take over winemaking and has since built the Humus label into one of Portugal's better-known natural wine projects.

The estate totals approximately 20 hectares, of which 9 to 10 hectares are planted to vine. Soils are a mix of red clay and limestone. The estate received organic certification in 2007. In the vineyard, Rodrigo uses natural compost and applies only small quantities of copper and sulfur when necessary. White varieties planted include Arinto, Fernão Pires, and Vital; red varieties include Castelão, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, and Syrah. Grasses grow freely between vine rows, supporting biodiversity on the estate.

Rodrigo made his first Humus wine in 2009. His approach in the cellar involves no additions: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, no fining agents, no filtration, and no added sulfites at bottling. White wines are typically whole-cluster direct-pressed and fermented in old oak barrels, with aging of around 10 months before bottling. Production volumes are small, and the wines are labeled by lot — LB for white lots from the estate's own vineyards — to distinguish vineyard sources across the range.

Wine region

Lisboa, Portugal

The Lisboa wine region, formerly labeled Estremadura, spans the Atlantic coast north of Lisbon and encompasses nine DOCs. The Óbidos DOC sits roughly one hour north of the capital, situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Serra dos Candeeiros mountains at elevations of 150 to 200 meters. Cold, wet westerlies funnel through gaps in the hills and blow across the vineyards year-round, creating a cool, high-humidity microclimate that slows ripening and builds natural acidity in the grapes. Soils across the Óbidos zone are predominantly calcareous clay and limestone.

Óbidos is historically known for sparkling wine production, as the cool damp conditions suit grapes with high natural acidity. The key white varieties authorized in the DOC include Arinto and Fernão Pires, both of which thrive in the Atlantic-influenced climate. Arinto is prized for its persistent citrus character and ability to retain acidity even in warmer vintages, while Fernão Pires contributes aromatic lift and body. The broader Lisboa IGP classification allows producers like Encosta da Quinta to work outside DOC blend rules while still expressing the distinct terroir of the Óbidos zone.
