The Wine: Cru Beaujolais Morgon 2019
Domaine Perraud Cru Beaujolais Morgon is made from 100% Gamay grapes certified organic and biodynamic grown in the Douby subzone near the northern border of the Morgon appellation. Morgon is famous for its wines of greater structure than the other Cru Beaujolais. Semi-carbonic maceration for this great Gamay, aged six months in neutral oak barrels. Medium-bodied red wine, bright with red fruit, and Morgon's characteristic earthiness.
The Producer: Domaine Isabel and Bruno Perraud
Isabelle and Bruno Perraud founded their Domaine Perraud in 1987. They farm 8.5 hectares of vineyards - certified organic since 2002 and biodynamic in 2018 - in several Beaujolais locations, including Morgon, Moulin-à-Vent, and Fleurie. Isabelle and Bruno adopt a low-intervention approach in the cellar. Each of their wines is handcrafted with the utmost care and are easily some of the best examples of Beaujolais (red wine made from Gamay grapes) and Pouilly-Fuisse (white wine made from Chardonnay grapes) on the market.
The Region: Beaujolais
The Beaujolais wine region is located south of Burgundy. It stretches for about 50km from the town of Mâcon and its characteristic rolling hills to the flatlands bordering the regional capital and world-renown culinary center Lyon on the north.
Beaujolais wine region is split in two by the Nizerand River. The north of the river is where we find the Crus and Beaujolais Villages, whereas south of the river is where Beaujolais and Beaujolais Nouveau are made.
Gamay is the dominant grape varietal of the region giving its best when grown on the granite and sandy clay soils north of the Nizerand River and made into Beaujolais Crus and Beaujolais Villages easy-drinking delicious wines.
There are ten Beaujolais Crus where the best Beaujolais are made: Brouilly, Chenas, Chiroubles, Cote de Brouilly, Fleurie, Julienas, Morgon, Moulin-a-Vent, Regnie, and Saint-Amour.
