Product Description

The Wine: Between Us Skin Contact 2022

Between Us Skin Contact is a skin-contact natural wine (orange wine) made from a blend of organically farmed Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are destemmed and pressed; maceration for 90 days, bottled unfiltered, unfined.

The Producer: Between Us • Borgo Savaian

This is a special project spearheaded by Coly Den Haan and her partner Angelica Luna, hence the name, Between Us. Label art is by a local female artist in LA - Hannah Kitziger. Borgo Savaian di Bastiani Stefano is a family winery with just 44 acres of indigenous varietals. Located near the foothills of Colli Goriziani (3 miles west of Slovenia).

The Region: Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Friuli Venezia Giulia has become in recent years one of the most important wine-producing regions in the world. Winemaking and viticulture have reached levels comparable to that of major European wine regions such as the Mosel in Germany and the Loire Valley in France.

Friuli Venezia Giulia's wine landscape is a mosaic of international and native grape varietals. Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot are counterpointed by local heroes Pinot Grigio, Picolit, Friulano, Verduzzo, Ribolla Gialla, and Schioppettino.

Diversity is indeed the quintessential character of Friuli Venezia Giulia: a border region that throughout history has seen a commingling of peoples, cultures, and languages. Friuli Venezia Giulia's Italian, Austrian, and Slovenian influences are evident in architecture, literature, and of course winemaking and viticulture.

Friuli Venezia Giulia borders with Trentino-Alto Adige (north-west), Veneto (south-west), Austria (north), Slovenia (west) and gets its name from the merger of Friuli region and Venezia Giulia, a region encompassing parts of Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia. The capital of Friuli Venezia Giulia is the seaport city of Trieste, located near the border with Slovenia.

The Terroir of Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Friuli-Venezia Giulia displays a variety of microclimates, from the cold pre-alpine climate in the eastern part of the region, following the Julian Alps, to the Mediterranean climate characterizing the southern flatlands.

Wines from Friuli-Venezia Giulia are heavily influenced by the region's position, squeezed as it is between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea. Freshness, good acidity, and finesse are some of their main characteristics.

Soil composition varies depending on the sub-region, but perhaps the most typical is represented by Marl and sandstone - also known as "flysch" or with the local term "Ponca", which is found in the Collio area.

The Red Wines of Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Friuli-Venezia Giulia's red wine production is often obfuscated by its world-class white wine production. However, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, along with native varietals such as Ribolla Nera and Schioppettino, we can find some of the best Italian expressions of red wines made from international varietals.

In recent years, more and more producers have been experimenting with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and also Pinot Noir. The quality of Friuli-Venezia Giulia winemaking is so consistent across the board that international varietals give some of the best red wines made in the region.

The White Wines of Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Friuli-Venezia Giulia is regarded as one of the top wine-producing regions for white wines not only in Italy but also worldwide. All three DOCGs are white wines - Ramandolo DOCG, Picolit DOCG, and Rosazzo DOCG. Some of the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world is produced in the Collio wine region, near the city of Gorizia, on the border with Slovenia, and the Grave DOC appellation.

Furthermore, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, together with neighboring Slovenia, is the mecca for orange wine lovers. Some of the techniques pioneered by winemakers from Friuli-Venezia Giulia are extended maceration on the skins and the use of amphorae.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package gets returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee to be determined based on shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive, we are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to re-route a package after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancelling fee – the amount depends on how big the order is. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat/frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. please let us know should you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Wine region

Friuli–Venezia Giulia, Italy

California is a prominent wine-producing state in the United States. It is characterized by a wide variety of climates and geographical features conducive to viticulture. The state encompasses several well-known wine regions with distinct climatic conditions and grape varietals.

Napa Valley is one of the most famous wine regions globally and is located north of San Francisco. It is renowned for its Cabernet Sauvignon, produced in a climate moderated by fog from San Pablo Bay. The region also grows Merlot, Chardonnay, and other varietals. Napa Valley features diverse soils, including volcanic and sedimentary, contributing to its wines' robust flavors.

Sonoma County neighbors Napa Valley and is more extensive and diverse. It has a cooler climate due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, making it ideal for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel. Sonoma County is known for its varied terroirs, from the cool Sonoma Coast to the warmer Sonoma Valley.

Central Coast spans from San Francisco Bay to Santa Barbara County and includes several smaller AVAs (American Viticultural Areas). This region produces a wide array of grapes, benefiting from a long growing season influenced by coastal breezes. Notable sub-regions include Paso Robles, known for robust red wines like Syrah and Zinfandel, and Monterey County, where cooler climate varietals like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive.

Sierra Foothills, located east of Sacramento, rises from the valley into the mountains of the Sierra Nevada. This region, known historically for its role during the California Gold Rush, produces wine from old vine Zinfandel and increasingly notable Rhône varietals. The higher elevation results in significant diurnal temperature variation, which preserves acidity and enhances flavor complexity in the grapes.

Lodi is in the Central Valley, south of Sacramento, and benefits from a Mediterranean climate. It is known for its old vine Zinfandel, with some vines dating back to the late 19th century. Lodi's sandy soils provide good drainage and are resistant to phylloxera, contributing to the health and longevity of its vines.

Mendocino County is north of Sonoma and has a cooler maritime climate. It is recognized for organic and sustainable viticulture, focusing on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The region's Anderson Valley benefits from coastal fog and cool temperatures that extend the growing season.

Each of these regions contributes to California's reputation as a versatile and high-quality wine-producing area, committed to tradition and innovative practices in viticulture and enology.
