Tasting notes

This is Barbera pushed to its absolute limit — decade-plus of aging transforms its characteristic roar of fruit and acidity into something far more composed, with espresso, cedar, tobacco, and crushed black stone pulling the wine into genuine complexity. The 5% Nebbiolo adds a structural tension that keeps the palate focused and long.

San Fereolo's 'Austri' is a Langhe Rosso DOC blending 95% Barbera with 5% Nebbiolo, sourced from the Austri vineyard in the Valdiberti subzone of Dogliani, Piedmont. The vineyard sits at roughly 1,300 feet elevation on ancient limestone soils. Nicoletta Bocca farms all parcels under Demeter-certified biodynamic management, using no synthetic inputs and only copper and sulfur in very small quantities.

After total destemming, the wine ferments spontaneously in large wooden vats with a 15-20 day maceration and no temperature control unless the must approaches 33°C, at which point it is briefly racked to tank to cool before returning to wood. It then ages for three years in large Slavonian oak botti (ranging from 7 to 40 hectoliters), followed by at least three to four additional years in bottle before release — meaning this 2013 did not reach market until approximately 2021.

The result is a wine with tertiary depth layered over still-present dark fruit. Sappy black cherry, cassis, roasted plum, and wild black raspberry sit alongside leather, mountain herbs, espresso, cedar, and tobacco. The palate is medium-plus in body with extremely fine tannins and a persistent streak of acidity anchoring a mineral core of crushed black stone and fired clay. The Nebbiolo component adds structural lift to Barbera's natural fruit density.

The wine's firm acidity and dark fruit make it an obvious match for braised short rib, wild boar ragu, or duck confit. Aged Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Stagionato work well if you want something simpler. It has enough weight to hold up to truffle-dressed pasta, a local pairing in the Langhe tradition.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

San Fereolo

Nicoletta Bocca left Milan in 1992 to acquire the San Fereolo property in Dogliani, assembling parcels from growers who were no longer farming. The estate now covers 12 hectares under vine, with the oldest Dolcetto vines planted in 1936 and the youngest dating to 1978. Bocca was among a small number of female winemakers working in Piedmont at that time.

Bocca began making organic wines in 2004, influenced by a neighbor in Dogliani who had always farmed without additions or interventions. In 2005 she introduced biodynamic practices throughout the vineyard. The estate is now certified biodynamic under Demeter. Farming uses only copper and sulfur in small quantities, and all fruit is hand-harvested.

In the cellar, Bocca uses indigenous yeasts exclusively, with no temperature control unless fermentations run dangerously hot. Maceration for the Austri and the flagship Dogliani runs 15-20 days in large wood vats. Elevage lasts three years in large Slavonian oak botti ranging from 7 to 40 hectoliters, followed by three to four years of bottle aging in her cellar before release. The wines are unfined and unfiltered.

Wine region

Piedmont, Italy

The Langhe is a hilly zone in the province of Cuneo in southern Piedmont, centered around the city of Alba and extending between the Tanaro and Bormida rivers. Elevations range from roughly 200 to 600 meters above sea level, with predominantly calcareous clay and marl soils formed from marine sediments. The climate is temperate continental: warm summers, cool autumns with significant fog, and evenly distributed rainfall that allows for slow, extended grape ripening.

The Langhe DOC is a broad regional designation covering approximately 1,400 hectares across 94 municipalities in the province of Cuneo. It sits above more specific appellations including Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera d'Alba, and Dogliani DOCG. Dogliani, located immediately south of Barolo, is recognized as the spiritual home of Dolcetto in Piedmont, with documented cultivation records dating to 1593. San Fereolo's Barbera parcels for the Austri fall within the Valdiberti subzone of Dogliani, where limestone soils and high-altitude sites give the fruit unusual concentration and longevity.
