Tasting notes

Blending a white grape into a red ferment is unusual enough, but doing all three varieties carbonic, whole-cluster, in alternating layers in a single sealed tank is a genuinely uncommon approach that produces something translucent and floral with bright red-cherry snap. At 12% ABV with no added sulfur during winemaking, it drinks like a chilled summer red without the weight.

  • Style: Light-bodied, chillable red; translucent ruby; fresh cherry, floral, and herbal notes; 12% ABV; 494 cases produced
  • Grapes & Terroir: 52% Barbera, 24% Primitivo (Fox Hill Vineyard, Talmage Bench, Mendocino; sandstone, river rock, quartz soils; organically farmed); 24% Sauvignon Blanc (Mi Hija Vineyard, Redwood Valley, Mendocino; biodynamically farmed)
  • Winemaking: All three varieties harvested same day, whole-cluster, true carbonic co-fermentation in sealed tank; aged in 41hL concrete tank, sandstone terra cotta jar, and 2 neutral French oak barrels; native yeast only; no sulfur added during fermentation or aging
  • Serving: Serve chilled at 50-55F; no decanting needed; best within 1-2 years of vintage
  • Pairing: Charcuterie, grilled salmon, tomato-based dishes, roasted chicken, antipasto
  • Similar To: For fans of chillable reds like Beaujolais, carbonic Carignan, or Gamay who want a California take at low alcohol

The 2020 Amore Blendo is a light red blend of 52% Barbera, 24% Primitivo, and 24% Sauvignon Blanc sourced from two organically farmed Mendocino vineyards. The Barbera and Primitivo come from Fox Hill Vineyard, located on the Talmage Bench between Hopland and Ukiah, where the soil is predominantly sandstone, river rock, and pebbles with large quartz pieces. The Sauvignon Blanc comes from Mi Hija Vineyard in the Redwood Valley, a biodynamically farmed neighbor to Fox Hill.

All three varieties were picked on the same morning in early September 2020, whole-cluster, and layered in alternating rows inside the tank until it was sealed for true carbonic fermentation. After pressing, the wine aged in three vessels simultaneously: a 41-hectoliter concrete tank, a sandstone terra cotta jar, and two neutral French oak barrels. No sulfur was added during fermentation or aging. A small amount may have been added at bottling. Only 494 cases were produced.

At 12% ABV, this wine sits closer to a chillable dark rosé than a conventional red. The carbonic fermentation and early September harvest date preserve fresh acidity and lift aromatics rather than push concentration. Serve slightly chilled, around 55F, as you would a Beaujolais or light Gamay.

The wine's bright acidity and low tannin make it a strong match for charcuterie boards, grilled salmon, or a simple tomato and bread salad. It also holds up well alongside lightly spiced dishes like roasted chicken thighs with herbs. Serve slightly chilled alongside antipasto or at the start of a summer meal.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Broc Cellars

Broc Cellars was founded in 2006 by Chris Brockway, an Omaha native who studied oenology at Fresno State before setting up an urban winery operation in Berkeley, California. The winery moved into its current space in Berkeley's Gilman District in 2014, operating out of a former ink factory. What began as a single-barrel project has grown to more than 20 wine releases per year, all produced at the Berkeley facility from grapes sourced across California.

Broc works exclusively with organically or biodynamically farmed fruit. The winery has sourced from Fox Hill Vineyard in Mendocino since 2013, taking over farming operations in 2021 and purchasing the 60-acre site in 2023. Fox Hill received CCOF organic certification in early 2024. Cover crops are used to build soil health and water retention, and sheep graze between the vines in spring to manage cover and add fertility. Mi Hija Vineyard, source of the Sauvignon Blanc in the 2020 Amore Blendo, is farmed biodynamically.

All Broc wines ferment with native yeasts only. No nutrients, enzymes, commercial yeast, bacteria, or tannins are added at any stage. Sulfur is never added during fermentation or aging; a small amount is occasionally added at bottling depending on the wine and vintage. The Amore Blendo is made using true carbonic fermentation: all three varieties are layered whole-cluster in a sealed tank, allowing intracellular fermentation before pressing. After pressing, the 2020 was aged in a combination of a 41-hectoliter concrete tank, a sandstone terra cotta jar, and two neutral French oak barrels.

Wine region

Mendocino, USA

Mendocino County sits approximately 130 miles north of San Francisco within the North Coast AVA and contains 13 nested sub-appellations spanning dramatically different climate zones. The Mendocino Range divides the county into two distinct spheres: a cool, maritime-influenced west side anchored by Anderson Valley, and a warmer, more continental eastern corridor that includes Redwood Valley and the Ukiah Valley. Fox Hill Vineyard sits on the Talmage Bench on the eastern side near Ukiah, where warm days and moderate nights allow Italian varieties to ripen steadily.

Redwood Valley AVA, where Mi Hija Vineyard is located, is an upland valley where a gap in the coastal ridge allows Pacific air currents to moderate temperatures. This leads to gradual fruit ripening and wines with higher acidity than those from the warmer Ukiah floor. The dominant soils across the eastern Mendocino valleys include deep alluvial loam, gravelly loam near waterways, and in the Talmage Bench area specifically, pebbly sandstone with quartz and river rock. Mendocino County is recognized as a national leader in organic viticulture, with approximately 25% of planted acreage certified organic.
