Tasting notes

This is Macabeo at an elevation and level of purity you rarely see: tangerine peel, white flowers, and a clean brine note from 45-year-old vines on limestone at 450 metres. The gentle fizz and residual CO2 from early bottling keep it lively without pushing it into full sparkling territory.

  • Similar To: For fans of Vinho Verde and low-intervention sparkling whites who want saline, mineral-driven Macabeo

Abeurador Tranquil is 100% Macabeo sourced from a single family vineyard named Abeurador in Vilalba dels Arcs, Terra Alta. The vines are roughly 45 years old, planted at approximately 450 metres above sea level in shallow soils over limestone bedrock. The grapes were direct-pressed and fermented entirely in stainless steel with no added sulfur.

The wine was bottled just before fermentation completed, trapping a small amount of residual CO2. The result is not a true pétillant naturel but sits in a similar register: lightly fizzy, with a whisper of natural sweetness balanced by a pronounced saline, mineral pull. Think Vinho Verde in structure but with a distinctly Catalan character.

On the nose and palate: green citrus, tangerine peel, white flowers, crushed pear, and a clean brine note that comes directly from the vineyard's limestone and elevation. The finish is bright, dry-leaning, and refreshing. At 13%, it drinks lighter than its alcohol suggests.

Zero sulfur, zero additives. Every decision here reflects Laureano Serres Montagut's long-standing commitment to zero-intervention winemaking, which he has practiced consistently since the early 2000s.

Works well with anything from the sea: grilled prawns, fried anchovies, or clams in white wine. The saline, citrus-forward profile also makes it a natural match for fresh goat cheese or a plate of marinated olives before a meal.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Mendall

Laureano Serres Montagut is based in El Pinell de Brai, a small town in the Terra Alta. A former computer programmer in Madrid, he returned to his hometown in 1996 and briefly ran the local Catedral del Vi cooperative, a functioning winery designed by students of Gaudí before the Spanish Civil War. He left the cooperative when its priorities shifted away from quality and in 1999 vinified his first 500 litres under the Mendall label, using grapes from his grandfather's vines at Finca Caibelles.

From the outset, Laureano farmed organically and used wild fermentation. Around 2002 or 2003, after accidentally omitting sulfur dioxide from a batch and preferring the result, he eliminated SO2 from all his wines. He has farmed without it since. Today the Mendall estate covers roughly five to six hectares across several parcels, ranging from around 170 metres in El Pinell de Brai to approximately 500 metres on the higher plateau of the Terra Alta. Soils across all parcels have shallow surface layers over limestone bedrock. His daughter Alícia, having completed winemaking studies, now works alongside him.

Laureano's approach to the cellar is deliberately open-ended. In a single harvest he may produce up to 16 different cuvées, including direct-press whites, skin-macerated whites, red and white co-ferments, lightly sparkling frizzantes, and oxidative Garnacha. Vessels range from stainless steel vats to terracotta amphora. No sulfur is added at any stage. Abeurador Tranquil represents one of the more restrained expressions in the range: direct press, stainless steel only, bottled early to retain its natural CO2.

Wine region

Terra Alta, Spain

Terra Alta is the southernmost DO in Catalonia, situated in the west of Tarragona province near the Aragon border, between the Ebro River and the Els Ports mountain range. Vineyards sit at elevations between 350 and 550 metres above sea level, with mountain peaks reaching 950 metres. The climate is Mediterranean with a notable continental influence: summers are long, hot, and dry, winters are cold with temperatures dropping to -5°C, and annual rainfall averages just 400 to 450mm. Two local winds, the sea-driven Garbí and the dry northwestern Cerç, moderate humidity and help control vine disease without chemical intervention.

Soils in Terra Alta are predominantly limestone and clay with minimal topsoil, forcing vine roots deep into the bedrock. The DO officially gained recognition in 1972 and covers approximately 6,000 hectares across 12 municipalities. Garnacha Blanca is the flagship white grape and represents nearly a third of total plantings. Macabeo, Parellada, Garnacha Negra, and Carignan (Samsó) are also widely grown. The combination of high elevation, poor limestone soils, and strong diurnal temperature swings gives the whites of Terra Alta a freshness and tension that is atypical for this latitude in Spain.
