Tasting notes

The Parellada addition gives this Macabeo a floral, lower-alcohol lift that the standard Abeurador skips, while the limestone soils at nearly 470 meters deliver a saline, citrus-driven tension rarely found in white wines from this warm corner of Spain. Native yeast fermentation and zero sulfur add a subtle wild-bread character that keeps each sip interesting.

Abeurador P is Laureano Serres's Macabeo-dominant white from the Finca Abeurador vineyard in Vilalba dels Arcs, Terra Alta DO. The P stands for Parellada, a grape Laureano only occasionally adds to the base Abeurador blend. The vines average around 45 years old and are planted on calcareous loam soils at roughly 450 to 470 meters above sea level. Farming is organic throughout.

In the cellar, Laureano keeps things minimal: native yeast fermentation, no added sulfites, no fining, no filtration. The 2019 was fermented and aged in stainless steel, which keeps the wine tight, fresh, and direct. Total SO2 remains below 10 mg/L.

The result is a bone-dry white with pronounced citrus and saline character, a faint oxidative edge from native yeast activity, and the kind of bright, cleansing acidity that Terra Alta's limestone soils and high-elevation sites reliably deliver. The Parellada adds a floral lift and slightly lower alcohol that the straight Macabeo bottling does not always show.

Abeurador P is one of several cuvees Laureano produces from this named vineyard site, each bottled as a distinct expression depending on decisions made at harvest. No two vintages are identical, and production volumes are small.

Works well with grilled fish, tinned anchovies, or any dish where you'd reach for a squeeze of lemon. The saline edge pairs naturally with briny ingredients like oysters, clams, or good-quality olives. A plate of jamón ibérico and young Manchego is a straightforward and reliable match.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Mendall

Laureano Serres Montagut founded Mendall in El Pinell de Brai, Terra Alta, from the 1999 harvest. A former computer programmer who worked in Madrid, he returned to his hometown in 1996 and spent a year as president of the Catedral del Vi, a Gaudí-influenced wine cooperative built before the Spanish Civil War. He left to vinify on his own, starting with 500 liters from his grandfather's vines at Finca Caibelles. Today he and his daughter Alicia, who studied oenology in Tarragona, farm around five to six hectares split across parcels in El Pinell de Brai at roughly 170 meters and higher sites in Terra Alta reaching up to 500 meters above sea level.

Laureano has farmed organically from the start. The vineyards are planted on limestone-rich soils with little topsoil, which naturally limits yields and concentrates flavors in the fruit. Since 2017, a significant portion of his viticulture is centered in Vilalba dels Arcs at the lieu-dit of Terme de Guiu, a limestone site planted to massale selections of Garnatxa, old Carignan, and Macabeo. The Abeurador vineyard, also in Vilalba dels Arcs, holds Macabeo vines averaging 45 years old.

In 2003, Laureano forgot to add sulfur dioxide to one of his cuvees and liked the result. He has not used added SO2 in any of his wines since. All Mendall wines ferment with native yeasts and are bottled unfiltered and unfined. Across a given harvest, Laureano may produce up to 16 separate cuvees from the same five-hectare base, including direct-press whites, skin-contact macerated whites, co-ferments of red and white grapes, and oxidative Garnatxa. Decisions on vinification are made spontaneously according to each harvest's conditions. He is a co-founder of the Brutal wine label and an organizer of the H2O Vegetal natural wine fair in Barcelona.

Wine region

Catalonia, Spain

Terra Alta is the southernmost DO in Catalonia, located in the inland province of Tarragona along the border with Aragón. The region takes its name literally: Terra Alta means 'high land' in Catalan, and mountain peaks reach up to 950 meters, though most vineyards sit on lower slopes, valleys, and plateaus. Soils are primarily clay and limestone with good drainage and little topsoil, which forces vine roots deep into calcareous bedrock. This combination of elevation and lean soils gives the wines a freshness and mineral character that is uncommon for such a warm, sun-exposed area.

The climate in Terra Alta is Mediterranean-continental: long, hot, dry summers and cold winters, with temperatures that can drop to around 23°F. The Cierzo, a dry wind from the Ebro River valley to the west, moderates growing-season temperatures and reduces disease pressure in the vineyards. Key white grape varieties authorized in the DO include Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo, and Parellada. Garnacha Blanca is the region's signature white, but Macabeo-based wines from high-elevation parcels like Finca Abeurador show a distinct citrus and mineral profile that reflects the limestone terroir. Terra Alta sits within the broader Catalunya DO, which encompasses eleven sub-appellations including Priorat (DOCa), Montsant, Penedes, and Tarragona.
