Tasting notes

Conley Vineyard Syrah from Naches Heights punches well above its modest ABV: the whole-cluster, foot-stomped fermentation extracts structure and dark fruit without heaviness, and the andesite-loess terroir adds a stony, iron-edged mineral quality you don't find in lower-elevation Washington Syrah. It's the kind of wine that rewards another pour.

This 100% Syrah comes from Conley Vineyard, a certified organic site in the Naches Heights AVA of Washington State, situated northwest of Yakima at approximately 1,600 to 1,700 feet elevation. The vineyard sits on a plateau of Tieton andesite lava overlaid with windblown loess soils, giving it geology entirely distinct from the alluvial, Missoula Flood-shaped floors of the broader Columbia Valley. The vines are head-trained, and the combination of abundant sun, persistent wind, and cool nights preserves acidity in the fruit.

In the cellar, Joe Swick handled the grapes as whole clusters, foot-stomping them one to two times daily through fermentation with native yeasts. After approximately 30 days of skin maceration, the wine was gently pressed into neutral French oak for aging. No fining, no filtration. A small amount of sulfur was added at bottling for stability during transport.

The resulting wine lands in a savory, cool-climate register for Syrah: dark fruit threaded with cracked pepper, iron-tinged minerality, and a lift of acidity that keeps it nimble despite its structure. At 13% ABV, it drinks closer to a northern Rhone reference point than anything warm-weather.

Pair with lamb chops, duck breast, or grilled merguez where the savory, peppery character of the wine mirrors the meat. The bright acidity makes it work equally well alongside earthy dishes like mushroom ragout or lentils with roasted vegetables. A slight chill, around 58-60F, brings out the wine's freshness.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Swick Wines

Joe Swick is a fifth-generation Oregonian who began his wine career in 2003 at Owen Roe in Oregon before spending roughly a decade working harvests across Piedmont, Portugal, Tasmania, New Zealand, and France. He returned to Oregon in 2013 and launched Swick Wines, operating out of the Chehalem Mountains in the Willamette Valley. From the start, his sourcing has spanned both Oregon and Washington, with a particular focus on the higher-elevation, cooler sites of the Yakima area in Washington State.

Swick partners exclusively with certified organic and biodynamic growers. Conley Vineyard in Naches Heights is one of his core Washington sources, providing certified organic fruit grown on loess soils at roughly 1,600 to 1,700 feet elevation. In Washington, the dry climate and wind limit disease pressure, making organic farming more tractable than in wetter regions.

Swick's winemaking approach is consistent: native yeast fermentations only, whole clusters for red wines, foot-stomping rather than mechanical pump-overs, no temperature control, and no fining or filtration. He builds his own stock of clean neutral barrels over time to avoid brett contamination inherited from conventional cellars. Small amounts of sulfur are added at bottling on select wines when needed for stability, but additions during fermentation or aging are not part of his practice.

Wine region

Washington, USA

Naches Heights is a sub-appellation of the Columbia Valley AVA, located on an elevated plateau in Yakima County, Washington, northwest of the city of Yakima. The plateau ranges from 1,200 to 2,100 feet in elevation and sits entirely above the reach of the ancient Missoula Floods, which shaped the alluvial soils of most other Columbia Valley growing areas. Instead, Naches Heights is underlaid by Tieton andesite, a volcanic lava flow originating from the Goat Rocks volcano roughly one million years ago, covered by windblown loess soils that have accumulated over millennia. This gives the AVA a soil profile of Tieton loam and Ritzville silt loam, shallow, well-drained, and geologically unlike anything else in the Columbia Valley.

The climate at Naches Heights is cooler than the surrounding Columbia Valley floor due to elevation, with hot summer days moderated by significant diurnal temperature swings and persistent wind. Annual precipitation runs 10 to 13 inches, and the sloped plateau allows cold air to drain downhill, reducing frost risk. Naches Heights was designated an AVA in January 2012 and was notably the first AVA in Washington where every vineyard practiced either biodynamic or LIVE-certified sustainable farming. Syrah, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer are among the grape varieties that have shown the most promise in this cool, high-elevation setting.
