Tasting notes

This pet-nat pulls off something specific: Fernão Pires brings citrus blossom and orange peel aromatics, while five days of co-maceration with Baga adds a faint berry tint and grip without turning it into a serious wine. It is lightly cloudy, softly effervescent, and finishes with a clean mineral snap from the chalky-clay soils of Óis do Bairro.

Rosa Duck Pet-Nat is a naturally sparkling rosé from Bairrada, Portugal, made with 95% Fernão Pires and 5% Baga. The grapes come from 30-year-old vines planted across three sites: São Lourenço, Óis do Bairro, and Amoreira da Gândara. The first two sites have chalky-clay soils; Amoreira da Gândara is predominantly sandy. Grapes are sorted in the vineyard at harvest in mid-August.

Both white and red grapes are co-macerated in plastic eggs for five days, then fermented spontaneously in stainless steel using ambient yeasts over three weeks. The wine is bottled before fermentation is complete — the pét-nat method — trapping CO2 in the bottle naturally. It is not fined or filtered.

The result is a lightly cloudy, softly sparkling rosé with the bright citrus and floral character of Fernão Pires lifted by the skin-contact color and structure from Baga. It drinks with low alcohol, vivid acidity, and fine, gentle bubbles. Drink young.

Serve well chilled with fresh chèvre, sardines on toast, or lightly dressed seafood salads. The citrus acidity and gentle bubbles cut through fried foods well — bacalhau fritters or tempura vegetables work naturally. Also good on its own before a meal.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Duckman

The Pato family has been making wine in Bairrada at Quinta do Ribeirinho since the eighteenth century. João Pato began bottling wines after the DOC demarcation in the 1970s, and his son Luis Pato made his first single-varietal Baga wine in 1980, becoming one of the region's most prominent advocates for indigenous grapes. Since 2018, the project has operated under the name Duckman, with Luis's daughter Maria Pato leading winemaking.

Maria Pato works outside the constraints of standard Bairrada winemaking conventions, focusing exclusively on indigenous varieties: Baga, Fernão Pires, Bical, and Cercial. The two primary vineyard sites are Amoreira da Gândara, with predominantly sandy soils, and Óis do Bairro, with chalky-clay soils, both located less than 20 kilometers from the Atlantic coast. Grapes are farmed organically, with no use of synthetic pesticides or additives.

Winemaking across the Duckman range follows a minimal-intervention approach: native yeast fermentations, no fining, no filtration, and low or no added sulfur. The Rosa Duck Pet-Nat is made by bottling the wine mid-fermentation so residual CO2 is captured naturally in the bottle, the classic pét-nat method. The labels intentionally carry no regional designation, a choice made to let varietal and site character speak without institutional framing.

Wine region

Bairrada, Portugal

Bairrada is a DOC located in the western, coastal half of the Beiras region in central-northern Portugal, roughly two hours north of Lisbon. Vineyards sit on relatively flat terrain rarely exceeding 120 meters in altitude, running between the Atlantic coast to the west and the Buçaco and Caramulo mountains to the east. The proximity to the ocean produces a mild maritime climate with abundant rainfall, cool breezes, and significant day-to-night temperature swings during the ripening season. These conditions preserve acidity and extend the growing season.

The region's soils split into two broad types: limestone-rich clay in most of the DOC's core, and sandier alluvial soils closer to the coast — reflected directly in Duckman's two main vineyard sites, Óis do Bairro (chalky-clay) and Amoreira da Gândara (sandy). Bairrada's dominant red grape is Baga, a high-acid, high-tannin variety capable of long aging; whites are led by Fernão Pires (called Maria Gomes locally) and Bical. The region also has a long history of sparkling wine production under both the traditional method and, increasingly, pét-nat style.
