Tasting notes

Syrah from this corner of Veneto reads more like a cool-climate northern Rhone than anything you'd expect from northeastern Italy: violet, dried apricot, and dark berry over a firm, fresh tannic frame. The whole-berry fermentation and zero-sulfur approach keep the fruit lifted and the finish clean without sacrificing structure.

Raiz is a 100% Syrah sourced from Villalaga in the Colli Euganei, a volcanic hill zone in the province of Padua, northeastern Italy. The grapes are fermented whole-berry, producing a wine with deep, full color and firm yet fresh tannins. No sulfur is added at any stage, and the wine is unfined and unfiltered.

The nose leads with violet, dark berry, and dried apricot. On the palate, the tannins are structured but move with energy rather than grip, supported by the naturally high acidity the volcanic and calcareous soils of the Colli Euganei tend to deliver. Fermentation and aging take place in stainless steel and fiberglass tanks, keeping the fruit expression clean and primary.

Vigna Flor works two small vineyard sites in the Colli Euganei: a rented one-hectare parcel terraced on the south-facing calcareous slope of Monte Gemola, and a two-hectare site in a small valley between Monte Cinto and Monte Partizzon in Cinto Euganeo, purchased in 2020. Vines on both sites are up to 40 years old. The winery is based in Monselice.

Davide Boldrin and Francesca Gozzo launched Vigna Flor in 2019 after years running a restaurant and natural wine shop in Monselice. Davide learned winemaking at I Castagnucoli alongside Nicola Del Santo, and worked in close contact with Marco Buratti of Farnea, one of Veneto's leading natural winemakers. Farming follows synergistic and regenerative principles; no oenological additives are used, including sulfur.

Serve alongside braised lamb shoulder, wild boar ragu on pappardelle, or a board of aged hard cheeses. The firm tannins and fresh acidity also hold up well against grilled pork ribs or herb-crusted roast beef.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Vigna Flor

Davide Boldrin and Francesca Gozzo launched Vigna Flor in 2019 in the Colli Euganei, naming the project after their daughter Flora. Before turning to viticulture, the two spent roughly fifteen years running a restaurant and natural wine shop in Monselice, developing a deep familiarity with low-intervention producers. They trained in winemaking at I Castagnucoli in the Colli Euganei under Nicola Del Santo, who also provided cellar space for their first vintage. Davide also worked closely with Marco Buratti of Farnea, one of Veneto's most respected natural winemakers.

Vigna Flor farms two parcels totaling approximately three hectares within the Parco Regionale dei Colli Euganei. The first is a rented one-hectare site terraced on the south-facing calcareous sedimentary slope of Monte Gemola. The second, purchased in early 2020, covers two hectares in a small valley between Monte Cinto and Monte Partizzon in Cinto Euganeo, with vines up to 40 years old. Farming follows synergistic and regenerative agriculture principles, informed by permaculture studies. The estate is certified organic.

All wines at Vigna Flor are made without any oenological additives. Sulfur is banned at every stage of production. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts. Wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel and fiberglass tanks. The Raiz Syrah uses whole-berry fermentation. Wines are bottled without fining or filtration.

Wine region

Veneto, Italy

The Colli Euganei are a group of roughly one hundred volcanic hills rising abruptly from the flat Po plain in the province of Padua, about 60 kilometers from Venice. The highest point, Monte Venda, reaches 601 meters. The hills formed from a complex series of underwater volcanic events beginning approximately 43 million years ago during the Eocene period, producing the basaltic and tuffaceous soils that define the central and upper slopes. Calcareous and clay sedimentary layers from the ancient seabed also remain present, particularly on terraced lower slopes like those on Monte Gemola. The result is a mosaic of volcanic, limestone, and clay soils across a relatively compact area, with elevations ranging from roughly 50 to 600 meters and significant diurnal temperature swings that preserve acidity in the grapes.

The Colli Euganei DOC covers municipalities including Cinto Euganeo, Vò, Baone, Monselice, and Arquà Petrarca, all within the Parco Regionale dei Colli Euganei. The DOC permits a range of still red and white wines, with calcareous soils generally favoring whites and the mineral-rich volcanic terrain producing more structured reds. The zone's top designation is the Colli Euganei Fior d'Arancio DOCG, elevated from DOC to DOCG in 2011, produced from Moscato Giallo. International varieties including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah are planted alongside indigenous grapes such as Garganega, Moscato Giallo, Pinella, and Carmenere.
