Tasting notes

Blending Aglianico with Fiano, Falanghina, and Trebbiano is an unusual move that produces a rosato with more textural complexity than most — the Aglianico brings tart red-fruit acidity while the white varieties add floral lift and mineral edge. Nine to ten months in steel keeps it crisp and precise, with no oak softening the picture.

Mephisto is a rosato from Canlibero, a small two-hectare estate in Torrecuso, in the Sannio Beneventano zone of Campania's Benevento province. The wine is a blend of all four varieties grown on the estate: Aglianico and the white grapes Fiano, Falanghina, and Trebbiano, each contributing a distinct character — the structure and acidity of Aglianico, the fruit of Fiano, and the minerality of Trebbiano. Grapes are hand-harvested from multiple parcels at 420 to 470 meters elevation on calcareous-tufaceous, clay-rich soils.

Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts in the cellar, followed by approximately nine to ten months of aging in stainless steel tanks. The wine is unfiltered, unfined, and bottled with no added sulfites. Sediment may be present.

On the nose, the wine shows fragrant red berry fruit — raspberry and wild strawberry — with light floral and spice undertones. On the palate it is fresh and medium-bodied with good persistence. Serve at 46–50°F (8–10°C) in a tulip glass. Drink now or hold a few years in a cool cellar.

The label pays tribute to Mephisto, a dog belonging to a friend of producer Ennio Romano, who passed away during harvest.

Works well alongside first and second courses built around fish — grilled sea bream, seafood pasta, or a simple tuna crudo. Also good with roasted vegetables, fresh cheeses like mozzarella di bufala, or a cold rice salad. The lively acidity makes it versatile at the table.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Canlibero

Canlibero was founded in 2011 by Ennio Romano and Mena Iannella in Torrecuso, a village in the Sannio Beneventano at approximately 420 meters above sea level within the Taburno national park. Both Ennio and Mena come from grape-growing families; their first vintages were made in Mena's grandfather's cellar, which had a long history of selling grapes to the local cooperative. Ennio's interest in natural winemaking was sparked by an introductory course taught by wine writer and educator Sandro Sangiorgi.

The estate covers approximately two to three hectares divided into multiple small parcels, all farmed following biodynamic principles, with only copper, sulfur, and biodynamic preparations used in the vineyard. Soils are predominantly calcareous and tufaceous with clay, situated at 420 to 470 meters elevation. Planted varieties are Aglianico, Fiano, Falanghina, and Trebbiano. The Aglianico parcel known as Turrumpiso contains vines over 50 years old.

In the cellar, all wines undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. No sulfur dioxide is added at any stage. Wines are not filtered or fined before bottling. Aging vessels depend on the wine: the Mephisto Rosato spends approximately nine to ten months in stainless steel before bottling.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Sannio Beneventano is an inland hill zone in the province of Benevento, north of Naples, covering roughly 10,000 hectares of planted vineyard. Vineyards in the area tend to sit between 300 and 550 meters above sea level on calcareous, clay, and tufaceous soils, with a continental climate moderated by altitude. The Taburno massif is the dominant geographic landmark, lending its name to the area's most prestigious appellation.

The region holds three primary appellations: Aglianico del Taburno DOCG (elevated from DOC in 2011), Falanghina del Sannio DOC, and the broader Sannio DOC established in 1997. The Beneventano IGT covers the entire Benevento province and allows for blends of multiple varieties not permitted under the stricter DOC and DOCG rules. Key indigenous varieties include Aglianico, Falanghina, Fiano, Trebbiano, Coda di Volpe, and Piedirosso. Benevento province accounts for roughly half of all wine production in Campania.
