Tasting notes

Brockway picks his Zinfandel early on purpose, keeping alcohol at 13% and letting the grape's natural acidity do the work — the result is a red that tastes of fresh raspberry and red currant with a crack of black pepper rather than jam and raisins. At a liter in a screw-cap bottle, it is unapologetically a table wine, and it performs like one: it makes food taste better.

La Boutanche is a collaboration between natural wine importer Selection Massale and Broc Cellars winemaker Chris Brockway. The series launched in 2012 with the goal of producing honest, affordable natural wine in liter bottles with screw caps — made for the table, not the cellar. This Zinfandel-dominant blend pulls from organically farmed vineyards across Northern California, including sites in Sonoma Valley, Redwood Valley, and Lime Kiln Valley.

The grapes are destemmed and fermented with native yeasts in open-top stainless steel fermenters. After pressing, the wine ages for 8 months in neutral French oak barrels. No commercial yeasts, enzymes, or fining agents are used. Minimal SO2 is added only at bottling.

The result is dry, medium-bodied, and decidedly food-friendly. Flavors run toward fresh raspberry, red currant, and cranberry, with black pepper spice and bright, food-cutting acidity. This is Zinfandel picked early, before it tips into jammy, high-alcohol territory — a style Brockway has championed since his first vintage in 2006.

Pour it with anything off the grill — herb-marinated chicken, lamb burgers, or pork sausage. The acidity handles tomato-based pasta dishes well, including pizza. A simple charcuterie spread with cured meats and aged cheeses is a natural match.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Broc Cellars

Chris Brockway founded Broc Cellars in 2002 — starting with a single barrel — and released the first commercial vintage in 2006. He grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, studied oenology at UC Davis and later Cal State Fresno, and eventually landed in Berkeley, where the winery has been based since 2008. He was drawn to early-picked, lighter-bodied California Zinfandel at a time when the dominant style in the state leaned toward high alcohol, heavy extraction, and new oak. Broc Cellars operates as an urban winery in Berkeley's Gilman District, sourcing fruit from organically farmed vineyards across California from Mendocino south to the Central Coast.

All Broc Cellars wines use spontaneous fermentation — only native yeasts and bacteria present on the grapes are allowed to drive fermentation. The winery adds nothing during fermentation or aging: no commercial yeasts, nutrients, enzymes, or added tannins. Sulfur is added in small amounts at bottling only, on a wine-by-wine basis. In 2021, Brockway took over farming operations at Fox Hill Vineyard in Mendocino County, a 60-acre site planted largely to Italian varieties, and Broc Cellars became the owner in 2023. Fox Hill received CCOF certified organic status in 2024.

La Boutanche is a separate label produced in collaboration with natural wine importer Selection Massale. The La Boutanche series, which began in 2012, pairs Selection Massale with leading natural winemakers to produce affordable, immediately drinkable wines in one-liter screw-cap bottles. Broc's version is built around Zinfandel sourced from organically farmed Northern California vineyards, made in the same minimalist style as the rest of the Broc portfolio: native yeast fermentation, neutral oak aging, minimal sulfur.

Wine region

Northern California, USA

The fruit for this wine comes from organically farmed vineyards across three Northern California AVAs: Sonoma Valley, Redwood Valley in Mendocino County, and Lime Kiln Valley in San Benito County. Each area brings different character to the blend. Sonoma Valley's warmer inland floor and well-drained benchland soils produce Zinfandel with ripe red fruit and structural depth. Redwood Valley, an upland valley in Mendocino, benefits from cool Pacific air that enters through a gap in the coastal ridge, producing a longer growing season and notable red clay-loam soils that add complexity and restraint.

Lime Kiln Valley in San Benito County is a small, warm interior appellation notable for its limestone-rich soils — unusual for California Zinfandel — that contribute a mineral quality and firm acidity. Taken together, sourcing from multiple organically farmed Northern California sites gives the winemaker flexibility to assemble a blend that prioritizes freshness and balance over concentration. Northern California Zinfandel at this alcohol level and in this style remains a niche category, running counter to the riper, higher-alcohol benchmarks that dominated the region's reputation for decades.
