Tasting notes

This is a pet nat with real grip — rustic bubbles, wild red berry fruit, and a watermelon-rose petal nose that keeps things fresh without going sweet. The Touriga Nacional brings structure and florals; the Castelão adds earthy depth. It drinks like something made for an afternoon on the Atlantic coast.

Humus Pet Nat Rosé is made by Rodrigo Felipe at Quinta do Paço in Alvorninha, near Óbidos, from a blend of Touriga Nacional and Castelão grown on clay-limestone soils roughly 20 km from the Atlantic. The grapes are co-pressed after harvest, fermented in wood barrels with native yeasts, and transferred to bottle about one month later to finish fermentation — the ancestral method, nothing added.

The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined, leaving it lightly cloudy with natural sediment. The bubbles are pronounced and rustic rather than fine or persistent, giving it a textured, earthy character that sets it apart from most rosé pétillants. No sulfites are added at any stage.

Óbidos sits at 150 to 200 meters above sea level in the Lisboa wine region, squeezed between the Atlantic and the Serra dos Candeeiros range. The maritime climate delivers steady Atlantic breezes, high natural acidity in the fruit, and a long, cool ripening season. Soils are primarily calcareous limestone with clay. The estate has been certified organic since 2007.

On the palate, expect wild red berries, watermelon, and rose petal, backed by a savory, earthy edge and brisk acidity. The 2019 vintage is rare in the market; subsequent vintages carry the same winemaking approach with no fundamental changes to method or grape composition.

Pour this alongside grilled shellfish, particularly clams or mussels cooked with white wine and garlic. It holds up well with Portuguese-style seafood rice or salt cod fritters. The acidity and effervescence also make it a strong match for fresh goat cheese and charcuterie at the start of a meal.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Encosta da Quinta

Encosta da Quinta, trading as Quinta do Paço, is a 20-hectare family estate in Alvorninha, near Óbidos. Rodrigo Felipe is the winemaker, farming approximately 9 to 10 hectares of vines planted on clay-limestone slopes. The property was acquired by Rodrigo's grandfather, and his father planted the first vineyard blocks in the 1990s. Rodrigo stepped into winemaking full-time in the early 2000s after a career as a civil engineer, releasing his first Humus-labeled wine in 2009.

The estate has held organic certification since 2007. In the vineyard, Rodrigo uses natural compost and minimal applications of copper and sulfur powder only when necessary. Red varieties planted include Castelão, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, and Syrah; white varieties include Vital, Fernão Pires, and Arinto. The location between the ocean and the Serra dos Candeeiros provides constant Atlantic airflow, reducing disease pressure and supporting chemical-free farming.

In the cellar, all wines are made with zero additions — no commercial yeasts, no sulfites, no fining agents, no filtration. Fermentation relies entirely on ambient native yeasts. The pet nat rosé follows the ancestral method: grapes are co-pressed, fermented in wood barrels, then transferred to bottle before fermentation completes. The residual sugar is consumed in bottle, producing natural carbonation. The wine is sold lightly cloudy with natural sediment present.

Wine region

Óbidos, Portugal

Óbidos is a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC) within the broader Lisboa wine region of southwestern Portugal, elevated from its former IPR status in 2006. The appellation sits at approximately 150 to 200 meters above sea level, positioned between the Atlantic Ocean and the Serra dos Candeeiros mountain range. A gap in the hills allows cold, wet Atlantic westerlies to sweep through the vineyards year-round, creating high humidity and cool temperatures that define the terroir. Soils are primarily calcareous limestone with clay.

The cool, moist climate of Óbidos is better suited to sparkling wine production than still table wines — a parallel frequently drawn to Champagne and its analogous climatic solutions. Much of the region's annual output carries some degree of effervescence. Principal grape varieties permitted under the DOC include Arinto, Fernão Pires, Vital, Castelão, and Tinta Miúda, with Touriga Nacional also widely planted by producers working under the looser Vinho Regional Lisboa classification. The long ripening season preserves natural acidity, which is the signature trait of wines from this stretch of the Portuguese Atlantic coast.
