Tasting notes

Castelão from the cool limestone-clay slopes of Óbidos produces something leaner and more acidic than southern Portuguese reds — closer to a bright, earthy Loire Cabernet Franc in feel than anything overripe. The Syrah adds a crack of black pepper and a floral undercurrent without pushing the wine into heavier territory. At 12% ABV with no sulfites added, it drinks with real energy.

Humus LCT19 is a red wine from Encosta da Quinta, a family estate in Alvorninha within the Óbidos DOC of Portugal's Lisboa region. The property, Quinta do Paço, sits at roughly 150 meters above sea level between the Atlantic Ocean and the Serra dos Candeeiros range. The 9 hectares of vines grow on red clay and limestone soils and benefit from consistent Atlantic breezes and high humidity, which slow ripening and preserve natural acidity.

Winemaker Rodrigo Filipe — a self-taught former civil engineer who began producing wine in the early 2000s — works the estate under organic certification (Sativa PT, since 2007). In the vineyard he uses natural compost and minimal copper and sulfur. The grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed and crushed, then fermented in small stainless steel tanks with wild yeasts. After fermentation the wine is aged in old oak barrels. Nothing is added at any stage; the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfites.

The blend of Castelão and Syrah is well-suited to the cool Atlantic terroir of Óbidos. Castelão delivers red currant, plum, and a slightly earthy, spiced character alongside firm natural acidity. Syrah adds a peppery, dark-fruited lift. The result is a medium-bodied red with real freshness — light on its feet for a red from this grape combination.

This is a no-added-sulfites, vegan wine. Store upright in a cool, dark place. Allow some air after opening if the wine shows any reduction on first pour.

Works well with pork-based dishes — think roast pork loin, carne de porco à Alentejana, or a charcuterie board with aged sheep's milk cheese. The high natural acidity handles tomato-based braises and hearty bean soups without getting lost. Can also stand up to grilled sardines or mackerel if you want to push a red-with-fish pairing.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Encosta da Quinta

Encosta da Quinta — trading as Quinta do Paço — is a family-owned estate of about 20 hectares in Alvorninha, near Óbidos, on Portugal's Silver Coast. The property was farmed as polyculture by Rodrigo Filipe's grandfather from the 1960s. His father planted the first vine parcels — Castelão, Fernão Pires, and Arinto — in 1991. In 2002, Rodrigo added Touriga Nacional, Syrah, and Tinta Barroca. He took over the estate in the early 2000s after working as a civil engineer and launched the Humus wine label with his first commercial release in 2009.

The estate holds organic certification from Sativa PT, granted in 2007. Rodrigo uses natural compost as fertilizer and applies small quantities of copper and sulfur in the vineyard only when necessary. Grasses grow between vine rows. The 9 hectares of vines planted on red clay and limestone slopes grow at approximately 150 meters above sea level. The red varieties planted include Castelão, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, and Syrah; whites include Arinto, Fernão Pires, and Vital.

In the cellar, Rodrigo works with minimal intervention. Red grapes are destemmed and crushed, then fermented in small stainless steel tanks using indigenous wild yeasts. After fermentation the wine is transferred to old oak barrels for aging. Nothing is added during winemaking or at bottling — no fining agents, no filtration, no added sulfites. Production volumes are small and vary by vintage.

Wine region

Óbidos, Portugal

Óbidos is a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC) within the Lisboa wine region, located roughly one hour north of Lisbon. The DOC sits at 150 to 200 meters above sea level, positioned between the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Serra dos Candeeiros mountain range to the east. The main soil formations are calcareous limestone with clay — calcareous conditions that favor acidity retention in the grapes.

The climate is primarily maritime: cool temperatures year-round, steady Atlantic breezes, and high summer humidity. A gap in the hills allows cold, wet westerlies to move through the vineyards, extending the ripening season and maintaining natural acidity. The DOC permits white varieties including Arinto, Fernão Pires, and Vital, and reds including Castelão and Touriga Nacional. Óbidos is historically associated with sparkling wines, though a growing number of producers are making still reds and whites under the Lisboa Vinho Regional classification.
