Tasting notes

A Deriva brings the Atlantic edge of the Óbidos DOC into focus — the clay-limestone soils and cool maritime breezes produce a wine with sharp, saline acidity and a textural grip from skin contact that keeps it lively despite the 2015 vintage age. It is the kind of orange wine that rewards food rather than asking to be sipped alone.

Humus A Deriva is a skin-contact orange wine from Encosta da Quinta, the family estate of Rodrigo Felipe located in Alvorninha, near Óbidos, in Portugal's Lisboa wine region. White grapes — including varieties such as Arinto and Fernão Pires grown on certified organic, clay-limestone soils — are macerated on their skins, fermented with native yeasts, then bottled unfiltered, unfined, and without added sulfites.

The estate, Quinta do Paço, sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the Serra dos Candeeiros mountains at roughly 150–200 meters above sea level. The maritime climate keeps temperatures moderate, delivers consistent Atlantic breezes, and produces a long, slow ripening season that preserves high natural acidity — a defining characteristic of wines from this corner of the Óbidos DOC.

Rodrigo Felipe is a self-taught winemaker and former civil engineer who took over vineyards his grandfather acquired in 1960. The property has been certified organic since 2007, and the first Humus wines were made in 2009. Today he farms approximately 9–10 hectares of the 20-hectare estate with no added chemicals in the vineyard or cellar.

A Deriva shows the grip and amber depth that extended skin contact imparts to white grapes, alongside the briny, high-acid character typical of Atlantic-influenced Portuguese terroir. The 2015 vintage, now with several years of bottle age, has had time to integrate its tannins and develop further savory, dried-fruit complexity.

The tannic grip and bright acidity make this a natural match for fatty or rich preparations — think grilled mackerel, bacalhau à brás, or a board of aged sheep's milk cheese. It also holds up well alongside spiced lentils or roasted root vegetables with herbs.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Encosta da Quinta

Encosta da Quinta is a family estate known as Quinta do Paço, located in the village of Alvorninha near Óbidos, in the Lisboa wine region of Portugal. The property was acquired by Rodrigo Felipe's grandfather in 1960. Rodrigo's father planted the first vines on the estate's slopes in the 1990s. Rodrigo himself trained as a civil engineer before leaving that career in the early 2000s to become the estate's winemaker — self-taught in both viticulture and winemaking.

The total property covers approximately 20 hectares, of which around 9 to 10 hectares are planted with vines. Soils are a mix of red clay and limestone. The location — sheltered by the Serra dos Candeeiros and exposed to Atlantic breezes — keeps temperatures moderate and humidity high, conditions that require attentive, low-intervention farming. The estate has held organic certification since 2007. Rodrigo farms without added chemicals in the vineyard and works with local grape varieties including Arinto, Fernão Pires, Castelão, Touriga Nacional, and others.

Rodrigo made his first wines under the Humus label in 2009. Winemaking across the Humus range is built on spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites. Skin contact maceration is used for the orange wine expressions, including A Deriva. The estate name Humus is a reference to the dark organic material in healthy soils, reflecting Rodrigo's emphasis on soil health as the foundation of the wines.

Wine region

Lisboa, Portugal

The Lisboa wine region stretches along Portugal's Atlantic coast north of Lisbon and encompasses nine DOCs. Óbidos is one of those DOCs, situated roughly an hour's drive north of Lisbon at elevations between 150 and 200 meters above sea level. The area sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the Serra dos Candeeiros mountain range, and a gap in the surrounding hills funnels cold, wet westerlies directly into the vineyards. High humidity in summer is a persistent challenge for viticulture here. The main soil formations are calcareous clay and limestone, which contribute both structure and naturally high acidity to the grapes.

The cool, maritime conditions of the Óbidos DOC favor long ripening seasons and high natural acidity in white varieties. Arinto and Fernão Pires are the dominant white grapes authorized for the DOC, alongside Castelão and Touriga Nacional for reds. The Lisboa region as a whole — formerly known as Estremadura until 2009 — ranges from fully Atlantic-facing coastal zones to more sheltered, transitional Mediterranean terrain inland. Wines from coastal sub-regions like Óbidos tend toward lower alcohol and higher freshness compared to inland Lisboa appellations such as Alenquer or Bucelas.
