Tasting notes

Sandy-soil Gamay from 70-year-old vines gives this Nouveau a lighter, more precise texture than most in the category, with genuine red fruit and a clean finish rather than the overripe or candy-like character common in commercial Nouveau. The one-liter format is not a gimmick: it simply reflects how this wine is meant to be shared at a table.

  • Similar To: For fans of light, zero-sulfite Gamay and natural Beaujolais Nouveau done seriously

The Nouveau Litre is 100% Gamay from old vines planted in 1950 in Saint-Germain-Nuelles, in the far south of Beaujolais near Lyon. The fruit comes from sandier parcels within the domaine, a deliberate choice that gives the wine a lighter, more open texture than the limestone-dominant sites used for the longer-aged cuvees.

Whole cluster maceration runs for approximately two weeks, then the wine is bottled without fining, filtration, or added sulfites. No additions of any kind are made in the cellar. The result is immediate and transparent: bright red-purple in the glass, with the kind of direct, juicy fruit that makes sense of the one-liter format.

This is a wine built around drinkability. The sandy soil keeps tannins low, the whole-cluster maceration preserves freshness and adds a slight grip from the stems, and the zero-sulfite approach keeps the fruit front and center. At around 11.5% ABV, it drinks lightly and finishes clean.

Raphaël Beysang and Emelie Hurtubise bottle all their wines in 1-liter or magnum format by choice, starting with the 2018 vintage. The Nouveau is the most immediate expression of their Gamay, released shortly after harvest in the style of Beaujolais Nouveau.

Serve slightly chilled at 55-58F alongside charcuterie, saucisson, or a simple roast chicken. The low tannin and bright acidity hold up well against fatty pork dishes. Works equally well with a tomato-based pasta or a mushroom omelet.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Rapahel Beysang

Raphaël Beysang grew up in Alsace in a family of restaurateurs. He began learning viticulture with Patrick Meyer in Nothalten, Alsace, then worked with Jean-Marc Dreyer before moving to the Auvergne to work alongside Vincent Marie of No Control and Patrick Bouju. Emelie Hurtubise is originally from Quebec. She met Justine Loiseau, Patrick Bouju's partner, while traveling in Japan and subsequently moved to the Auvergne, where she and Raphaël met while working in the same circle of winemakers. The couple settled in Saint-Germain-Nuelles in 2017, with Raphaël beginning the first vintage and Emelie joining in 2018.

Their domaine, GAEC Lapins des Vignes, farms approximately 7 hectares in the south of Beaujolais organically and with biodynamic practices. Soils across their parcels include sand, clay, limestone, granite, and pierres bleues. Soil work is done by horse. Vineyard treatments are limited to small applications of copper sulfate and volcanic sulfur, supplemented by biodynamic herbal preparations including nettle, horsetail, comfrey, and willow decoction. Fruit trees have been planted among the vines. Starting with the 2018 vintage, all wines are bottled exclusively in 1-liter or magnum format.

In the cellar, Raphaël and Emelie use a zero-additive approach: no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites at any stage. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts. For the Nouveau Litre, whole clusters macerate for approximately two weeks before the wine is bottled directly, without aging. The Nouveau fruit comes specifically from the sandier parcels of the domaine, chosen for the lighter texture those soils produce.

Wine region

Beaujolais, France

Beaujolais extends roughly 55 kilometers from north to south along the west bank of the Saone River, terminating just north of Lyon where the Rhone begins. The region divides broadly into two geological zones: the northern sector, where granite and schist soils dominate and the ten crus are located, and the southern sector, where clay, limestone, sand, and the golden limestone known as Pierres Dorees characterize the landscape. Saint-Germain-Nuelles sits in this southern zone, closer to Lyon than to Macon.

Southern Beaujolais produces wines under the Beaujolais AOC designation, typically lighter and earlier-drinking than the crus. The soils here, including sandy alluvial pockets, clay-limestone, and the blue-tinged stones called pierres bleues, yield Gamay that is lower in tannin and higher in freshness. Beaujolais Nouveau, released on the third Thursday of November each year, can only be produced under the Beaujolais AOC and Beaujolais-Villages AOC, not in the cru appellations. Whole-cluster semi-carbonic maceration is the traditional technique, a method closely associated with Beaujolais and popularized by Jules Chauvet in the mid-twentieth century.
