Tasting notes

Direct-press Sauvignon Blanc aged entirely in stainless steel lets the clay-silex terroir of Le Grand-Cléré speak without interference — expect taut citrus, crushed flint, and a lively, slightly spritzed texture from residual CO2. At 50-year-old vine concentration but without any skin tannin, it sits in a rare category: textured but weightless.

A l'Abordage! is 100% direct-press Sauvignon Blanc from François Blanchard's Le Grand-Cléré vineyard in Lémeré, a village roughly 40 minutes south of Tours. The grapes are pressed immediately without skin contact, fermented with native yeasts, and aged entirely in stainless steel. No sulfites are added at any stage, and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Residual CO2 may cause light refermentation in the bottle — open and drink promptly.

Le Grand-Cléré is a single parcel of roughly 3 hectares situated at approximately 110 meters elevation, one of the higher points on the Touraine plateau. The soils are firm clay studded with very large fragments of silex — flint too dense to plow mechanically. The Sauvignon Blanc vines are around 50 years old. Blanchard farms the site organically, certified by Ecocert, and is a member of Vins S.A.I.N.S. The parcel is managed as a permaculture system with fruit trees, natural ground cover, and no synthetic inputs.

Because the wine does not conform to AOC Touraine regulations, it is labeled Vin de France. The direct-press approach gives A l'Abordage! a lighter, fresher profile than Blanchard's skin-contact cuvée A Table!, with silex-driven minerality and bright citrus character up front. Production is very small and the wine moves quickly.

The wine's sharp acidity and silex minerality work well with fresh goat cheese from the Loire — a Crottin de Chavignol or Selles-sur-Cher. It also holds up to simple shellfish: oysters, clams on the half shell, or a lemon-dressed ceviche. The light CO2 texture makes it a good match for fatty charcuterie like rillettes, which are a regional staple around Tours.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Francois Blanchard

François Blanchard is the fifth generation of his family to tend the vineyards of Château du Perron in Lémeré. He spent years touring France as a jazz musician before his first serious vintage in 2003. He lives at the Château du Perron with his family, about 40 minutes south of Tours.

Blanchard farms a total of four hectares of vines. Three hectares are in Le Grand-Cléré, a parcel surrounded by woodland and fallow land, managed as a permaculture system with natural ground cover, fruit trees interspersed among the vines, and no synthetic inputs. The Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc vines here are approximately 50 years old, planted in firm clay with very large silex fragments that make mechanical plowing impossible. The estate has been farmed organically for over two decades and holds Ecocert certification. Blanchard is also a member of Vins S.A.I.N.S., a growers' association requiring zero additives in the cellar.

In the cellar, Blanchard works with native yeasts and makes decisions vintage by vintage. His white cuvées range from direct-press steel-aged wines like A l'Abordage! to extended skin-maceration wines aged in neutral oak or amphora. No sulfites or other additives are used at any stage. Wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Wine region

Loire Valley, France

Touraine occupies the central Loire Valley around the city of Tours, roughly 225 kilometers from both the Atlantic coast and the Massif Central hills. The climate sits between oceanic and continental: mild, with enough sun to ripen Sauvignon Blanc fully, but with sufficient Atlantic influence to preserve acidity. The district stretches roughly 100 kilometers along the Loire, from Blois in the east to Chinon and Bourgueil in the west. Lémeré, where Blanchard farms, lies in the southwestern portion of the Touraine plateau near Chinon, where the Vienne river joins the Loire.

Touraine soils are highly variable — ranging from chalky tuffeau limestone to flinty clay perruches, sands, and river gravels deposited over millennia. Sauvignon Blanc accounts for 43 percent of all Touraine plantings and is the dominant white grape of the region. The Touraine AOC covers 5,300 hectares across Indre-et-Loire, Indre, and Loir-et-Cher. Le Grand-Cléré sits on clay-silex soils at roughly 110 meters elevation, among the highest points on the Touraine plateau. Producers working outside AOC specifications bottle under the broader Vin de France designation, which many natural vignerons in the region prefer for its flexibility.
