LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
  • Style: Dry, light-bodied still rosé with a vivid, deep-pink hue; the short skin maceration on a blend of red and white varieties gives this wine texture and red-fruit intensity beyond what most conventional rosés offer; fresh, direct, and food-friendly from release
  • Grapes & terroir: Malbo Gentile, Lambrusco, Marzemino, and Spergola; biodynamically farmed on sandy clay soils with limestone in Castellarano, Reggio Emilia province; 250 metres elevation; 4,000 vines per hectare; average vine age 15–20 years
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; two to three-day skin maceration on mixed red and white varieties; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and concrete; bottled unfiltered with minimal sulfites added only for transport stability
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 50–55°F; no decanting; works beautifully chilled as an aperitivo or throughout a meal
  • Pairing: Prosciutto di Parma

Tasting notes

Deep, vivid pink with mauve highlights. The nose is expressive and fruit-forward, with tart red cherry, wild strawberry, pink grapefruit, and a faint herbal note. On the palate, fresh and dry with lively acidity, light phenolic texture from the skin contact, red currant character, and a clean, tangy finish.

Food pairings

Prosciutto di Parma, Japanese salmon sashimi, margherita pizza, grilled trout, summer salads, tagliere di salumi, Vietnamese rice paper rolls.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Il Farneto

Azienda Agricola Il Farneto was established in the mid-1990s by Marco Bertoni in Castellarano, a hill town in the province of Reggio Emilia between the ridgelines of Scandiano and Canossa. Marco's founding purpose was to bring natural, sustainable agriculture back to a zone that had been dominated by industrial production for decades. The estate covers 34 hectares in total, of which 8 are planted with vines, with the remaining land occupied by woods, wheat fields, vegetable gardens, and animals. Il Farneto operates as a closed biodynamic ecosystem, with Marco growing crops, raising animals, and using their by-products to prepare the biodynamic preparations that feed the soil.

Biodynamic farming was adopted from the early 2000s onward and the estate holds formal certification. Vineyards are densely planted at 4,000 vines per hectare on sandy clay soils with limestone at around 250 metres elevation. Varieties include indigenous grapes: Lambrusco Grasparossa, Spergola, Marzemino, Malbo Gentile, Malvasia, and Trebbiano Modenese. All vineyard work is done by hand. Winemaker Flavio Restani oversees the cellar, where fermentations are spontaneous and the wine sees no fining or filtration. Minimal sulfites are added only for transport stability when necessary.

The wines carry the "Rio Rocca" or "Giandon" names, both referencing local geographical features: the Rio Rocca is a nearby river known for its distinctive fossil-bearing rock formations, while "Giandon" is a dialectal Emilian expression. Labels in the range cover still rosé, red, orange, sparkling pét-nat, and ancestral method whites.

Wine region

Emilia–Romagna, Italy

Emilia-Romagna stretches across northern Italy from the Po plain in the north to the Apennine Mountains in the south, bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the east. The region is best known internationally for Lambrusco, the sparkling red wine that dominated export markets in the 1970s and 1980s before a long period of industrial overproduction damaged its reputation. In recent years, a new generation of producers has been restoring the variety's credibility by returning to traditional methods, dry styles, and genuine terroir expression.

Il Farneto is located in Castellarano in the province of Reggio Emilia, in the Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa DOC zone. This area lies in the foothills of the Apennines at elevations of 200 to 350 metres, where the soils shift from the heavy clays of the Po plain to sandier, more limestone-rich substrates that provide better drainage and vine stress. The continental climate here brings warm summers and cold winters, with diurnal variation across the hillside sites that preserves freshness and acidity in the fruit. The estate is surrounded by woods and fossiliferous gullies that support remarkable biodiversity, a landscape Il Farneto actively manages as part of its biodynamic farming approach.

Emilia-Romagna's indigenous varieties are diverse and well-suited to the territory's varied soils. Malbo Gentile, Marzemino, Lambrusco, and Spergola — the varieties in the Giandon Rosato — are all traditional to the province, though they are rarely found assembled in a single rosé blend outside of artisanal producers in the area. The region also holds a strong tradition of sparkling winemaking, from Lambrusco pét-nats to the more structured Metodo Ancestrale wines produced by estates like Il Farneto.
