Il Farneto

Il Farneto Frisant Bianco Pet-Nat 2024

Regular price $25.00
LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
  • Style: Dry, light-bodied naturally sparkling white; the ancestral method produces a lively, slightly rustic effervescence with the characteristic haze of an unfiltered pét-nat; the Spergola brings its native freshness, floral aromatics, and crisp acidity to the base, while the Sauvignon Blanc adds herbal definition
  • Grapes & terroir: 80% Spergola and 20% Sauvignon Blanc; Spergola is an ancient indigenous white grape native to the hills of Scandiano and Canossa, genetically distinct from Sauvignon Blanc (confirmed by DNA analysis in 2000), where it thrives on clay and chalk soils with natural drought resistance; vineyards at 820 ft elevation on sandy clay with limestone in Castellarano; organically and biodynamically farmed, hand-harvested, 4,000 vines per hectare
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts; ancestral method (pétillant naturel) — bottled during active fermentation; natural in-bottle re-fermentation produces the effervescence; unfined and unfiltered; minimal sulfite additions; all operations conducted manually
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve well chilled at 44–48°F; no decanting
  • Pairing: Torta fritta (traditional Emilian fried dough, served with cured meats)
  • Similar to: Pignoletto Frizzante from Colli Bolognesi, skin-contact pét-nat from the Loire, ancestral-method Vermentino from Sardinia

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Il Farneto

Azienda Agricola Il Farneto was founded in the mid-1990s by Marco Bertoni in Castellarano, Province of Reggio Emilia, on the boundary between the hills of Scandiano and Canossa. Bertoni's stated intent from the beginning was to contribute to sustainable agriculture by producing grapes and wine while working in harmony with the surrounding environment. The estate covers roughly 34 hectares of land in total, of which 8 hectares are planted to vineyards, with the remainder given over to woods and the fossiliferous gullies and natural gullied terrain that characterize this part of the Reggio Emilia hills.

The 8 hectares of vineyards are densely planted at 4,000 vines per hectare on sandy clay soils with limestone at around 820 feet elevation. The vines average 15 years of age. All vineyard work is carried out manually. The estate holds biodynamic certification, meaning that both the farming calendar and the treatments used in the vineyard comply with biodynamic principles: preparations from plant and mineral materials, lunar calendar timing, and an explicit commitment to the long-term biological vitality of the soil.

Winemaking at Il Farneto is handled by Flavio Restani, who works with the same philosophy Marco Bertoni established: minimal intervention, indigenous yeasts only, no fining, no filtration, and minimal sulfite use. The wines are named in reference to the local Rio Rocca river, celebrated in this corner of Reggio Emilia for its distinctive geology and natural character. Large French oak barrels up to 500 liters are part of the cellar, but all are old and neutral, used only for wines that benefit from gentle oxidative maturation.

The range covers the full spectrum of the estate's terroir: the Frisant Bianco and God Save the Wine for Spergola-based sparkling whites, the Frisant Rosato and Frisant Rosso for Lambrusco Grasparossa, and the Giandon wines for skin-contact and red blends.

Wine region

Emilia–Romagna, Italy

The hills between Scandiano and Canossa rise from the Po plain in the Province of Reggio Emilia, on the western edge of Emilia-Romagna, forming one of the most historically layered wine landscapes in northern Italy. The area was at the heart of medieval power in Italy — the Castello di Canossa sits on a rocky outcrop in these hills, the site where Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV famously stood barefoot in the snow in 1077 seeking absolution from Pope Gregory VII, with Countess Matilda of Tuscany mediating the conflict. That same landscape, marked by fossiliferous gullies, forested ridges, and castles, is where Spergola, the area's defining indigenous white grape, has been grown since at least the fifteenth century.

The Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa DOC covers these hills south of Reggio Emilia, where vineyards typically sit between 490 and 1,310 feet above sea level on sandy clay and limestone soils that drain well and warm quickly in the Mediterranean-influenced spring and summer. The climate is continental with a strong Po Valley influence: warm, humid summers with the risk of fog in autumn, and cold winters. The Apennines to the south provide shelter and create microclimatic conditions favorable to viticulture, including reliable summer heat and diurnal temperature variation that preserves aromatic freshness in white varieties.

Spergola is the white grape most closely identified with these hills. For centuries confused with Sauvignon Blanc, it was confirmed as a genetically distinct variety by DNA analysis in 2000, earning its own registration in Italy's National Grape Variety Catalogue and formal recognition in the Colli di Scandiano e Canossa DOC. The area also grows Lambrusco Grasparossa alongside Spergola, and the entire territory sits within the broader Emilia-Romagna food culture of Parmigiano-Reggiano, prosciutto, and traditional balsamic vinegar production.
