LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
Product Description

Bojo do Luar Duplo Chillable Red is a natural wine from Portugal's Vinho Verde region, crafted entirely from the Espadeiro grape. Sourced from 20-year-old vines in Felgueiras, the grapes are organically and biodynamically farmed. Upon harvest, the grapes are destemmed and transferred to 100-year-old, 1,100-liter amphoras (talhas), where they undergo foot treading. Ground chestnut flowers are added as a natural stabilizer before spontaneous fermentation begins, lasting approximately one month. Following maceration, the wine is moved to stainless steel tanks and bottled unfiltered with minimal sulfur addition (30 ppm), resulting in a fresh, authentic expression of the Espadeiro varietal.

Tasting notes

Aromas of candied strawberry and cherry. On the palate, it offers a light body with high, tickly acidity and a pithy, grippy finish. Matted red fruits linger, making it ideal for enjoying chilled on a sunny day.

Food pairings

Pairs excellently with Bacalhau à Brás, a traditional Portuguese dish featuring salted cod, onions, and finely chopped fried potatoes bound together with scrambled eggs.

If a package gets returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee to be determined based on shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive, we are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

Producer profile

Bojo do Luar

Bojo do Luar is a collaborative natural wine project based in Portugal's Vinho Verde region, initiated by importer Savio Soares in partnership with viticulturist Antonio Sousa and biodynamic producer Fernando Paiva. The project focuses on crafting low-intervention wines that authentically express the unique terroir of the area.

The vineyards are situated near the Tâmega River, in the foothills of the Serra do Marão mountain range, characterized by deep granitic soils and south-southwestern exposure. This location benefits from a cool temperate climate during spring, followed by warm days and cool nights leading up to the harvest in late September.

Bojo do Luar employs innovative winemaking techniques, notably the addition of ground chestnut flowers during fermentation. This natural stabilizer allows for minimal sulfur usage, aligning with the project's commitment to non-interventionist practices. Fermentation often takes place in large, century-old talhas (amphorae), promoting gentle extraction and preserving the wines' purity.

The portfolio includes distinctive wines such as "Luar Rosa," a rosé blend of Azal and Espadeiro, and "Doralice," a 100% Loureiro white wine. Other notable offerings include "Duplo," a chillable red made from Espadeiro, and "Tez," an orange wine from Avesso and Azal. These wines showcase the project's dedication to highlighting native Portuguese grape varieties through sustainable and innovative methods.

Wine region

Vinho Verde, Portugal

Vinho Verde is Portugal's largest demarcated wine region, located in the northwest corner of the country. The region stretches from the Minho River in the north, which forms the border with Spain, to the Douro River in the south, with the Atlantic Ocean defining its western boundary. Officially recognized as a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC) in 1984, the region encompasses approximately 21,000 hectares of vineyards across nine subregions: Monção e Melgaço, Lima, Basto, Cávado, Ave, Amarante, Baião, Sousa, and Paiva.

The name "Vinho Verde" translates to "green wine," though this refers not to color but to the wines' youthful freshness and vibrant acidity. The region's winemaking history dates back to Roman times, with documented exports to England occurring as early as the 12th century. The modern Vinho Verde region was formally demarcated in 1908.

Vinho Verde's terroir is characterized by predominantly granitic soils that provide drainage for the region's high rainfall. The Atlantic Ocean influences the climate, creating mild temperatures and high humidity that contribute to the wines' distinctive characteristics. Around 19,000 producers cultivate vines in this lush, green landscape, producing approximately 85 million liters annually.

While 86% of Vinho Verde production consists of white wines, the region also produces red and rosé styles. White Vinho Verde wines are known for their natural acidity, fruity and floral aromas, and slight effervescence. Recommended white grape varieties include Alvarinho, Arinto, Avesso, Azal, Loureiro, and Trajadura. The Monção e Melgaço subregion produces fuller-bodied Alvarinho wines with higher alcohol content, protected from direct Atlantic influence.

Red Vinho Verde wines, made primarily from Vinhão, Borraçal, and Amaral grapes, are less common but offer deep color and tannic structure. Natural wine producers like Bojo do Luar and Márcio Lopes are pioneering low-intervention winemaking in the region, showcasing authentic expressions of Vinho Verde's unique terroir. The region has also gained recognition for orange wines made with extended skin contact.
