Tasting notes

CBGB is a direct product of natural wine community solidarity: Raphaël sourced fruit from Vincent Marie's 50-year-old vine parcel after losing his own 2019 crop to frost, then let Vincent vinify it whole-bunch with zero inputs. The result is a textbook expression of alluvial-soil Gamay — red cherry, fresh earth, juicy without being simple — in a generous one-liter bottle.

CBGB stands for C'est Bon le Gamay du Beaujolais. The cuvée is a collaboration rooted in friendship: after spring frosts in 2019 severely cut Raphaël Beysang's own yields in Saint-Germain-Nuelles, he turned to his longtime colleague Vincent Marie of No Control in Auvergne. Vincent contributed fruit from a parcel he owns, cultivated by Raphaël, planted with 50-year-old vines on alluvial soils. The label echoes Vincent's own No Control aesthetic deliberately.

Vinification was handled by Vincent Marie in the No Control style: whole bunches, short maceration, free-run and press juices blended, and maturation in fibreglass vats. No additives were used from vine to bottle, no fining, no filtration, no added sulfur. The wine was bottled in recycled one-liter bottles, consistent with Beysang and Hurtubise's practice of releasing all their wines in liter or magnum format.

The 2019 growing season across Beaujolais was defined by April frosts, a heat spike exceeding 40°C in summer, drought, and violent August hailstorms that hit the southern Pierres Dorées zone especially hard, reducing regional yields by 25% or more. Grapes that survived to harvest showed concentrated flavor, good natural acidity, and ripe fruit, conditions that suited the unfussy, zero-intervention approach here.

In the glass, this is a medium-bodied Gamay with bright red fruit, a hint of earth, and the light-footed structure Beaujolais alluvial soils tend to produce. Drink with a slight chill.

Serve lightly chilled at around 55-58°F. Works well with charcuterie, roast chicken, lentil dishes, or a simple cheese board. The low tannins and bright acidity make it flexible at the table without demanding a heavy dish.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Rapahel Beysang

Raphaël Beysang grew up in Alsace, the son of restaurant owners and the grandson of a winegrower. He trained in the vineyards of Patrick Meyer in Nothalten before working with Jean-Marc Dreyer, through whom he met Vincent Marie. He subsequently moved to Auvergne to work at Vincent Marie's No Control domaine, where he later crossed paths with Émélie Hurtubise, who had come to Auvergne via Quebec and Japan after working with Patrick Bouju and Justine Loiseau. The two established their own label, Lapins des Vignes, in Saint-Germain-Nuelles in the southern Beaujolais in 2017.

Raphaël and Émélie manage approximately 7 hectares of Gamay in the southern Beaujolais on soils of clay, limestone, and the Pierres Dorées golden stones characteristic of their corner of the appellation. Farming is biodynamic: no synthetic chemistry, only small doses of copper and sulfur applied by backpack sprayer, supplemented with biodynamic herbal preparations including nettle, horsetail, and comfrey infusions. Soil work is done with the help of a horse.

In the cellar, the approach is zero-zero: no additives at any stage, no fining, no filtration, no added sulfur. Techniques vary by cuvée but include whole-bunch maceration and fermentation with native yeasts in large neutral vessels. All wines are bottled in one-liter or magnum format. For CBGB specifically, vinification was carried out by Vincent Marie using whole-bunch maceration, blending of free-run and press juice, and maturation in fibreglass vats.

Wine region

Beaujolais, France

Beaujolais sits at the southern edge of Burgundy, stretching roughly 55 kilometers north to south between Mâcon and Lyon. The region is devoted almost entirely to Gamay, a thin-skinned, early-ripening grape that expresses itself very differently across the region's varied soils. The northern portion, home to the ten named crus such as Morgon, Fleurie, and Moulin-à-Vent, sits on ancient granite and schist. The southern portion, including the Pierres Dorées sub-area where Raphaël Beysang is based in Saint-Germain-Nuelles, has soils rich in clay, limestone, and the distinctive golden sedimentary stones the zone is named for.

Beaujolais produces under three classifications: Beaujolais AOC, Beaujolais-Villages AOC covering 38 communes, and the ten Crus recognized for quality and site specificity. Wines labeled Vin de France, as with many natural producers who work outside appellation rules or blend across zones, carry no geographic restriction on the label but often reflect very specific terroir choices made by the grower. The region is exclusively Gamay for red wines, and its best expressions combine high natural acidity, low tannin, and vivid red fruit.
