Tasting notes

Deep ruby with a garnet rim from age. The nose is complex and earthy, with dark plum, dried cherry, tobacco, black pepper, graphite, and a faint leather note. On the palate, firm tannins frame concentrated dark fruit, saline minerality, and lively acidity, with a long, dry, slightly bitter finish.

BodyFruitTanninAcidity
  • Style: Dry, full-bodied red with high natural acidity and firm, grippy tannins; the extended skin maceration and 30 months in old chestnut barrels develop a complex, savoury profile that sets Drogone apart from more conventionally made Aglianico; needs decanting and has strong aging potential
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Aglianico; 75-year-old vines in Montemarano, Irpinia, Campania; volcanic soils at high altitude; hand-harvested; organically farmed; the Montemarano subzone sits within the broader Aglianico d'Irpinia appellation territory, adjacent to the Taurasi DOCG zone
  • Winemaking: Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts; two months of skin maceration; no temperature control; 30 months aging in old chestnut barrels; bottled unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfites at any stage
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 63–66°F; decant for at least one to two hours before serving; the wine will continue to open in the glass over several hours and is worth revisiting across an evening
  • Pairing: Agnello al ragù (braised lamb ragù with pasta)

Cantina Giardino Drogone Aglianico 2019 is a dry red wine made from 100% Aglianico grown on 75-year-old vines in Montemarano, a high-altitude village in Irpinia, Campania. Produced by Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola at Cantina Giardino, the grapes are hand-harvested from organically farmed volcanic soils and undergo two months of skin maceration with spontaneous fermentation using only indigenous yeasts. Cantina Giardino Drogone Aglianico 2019 then ages for 30 months in old chestnut barrels before bottling unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites. 13% ABV. Campania IGP.

Agnello al ragù, braised wild boar, aged Pecorino, grilled beef tagliata, Moroccan lamb merguez, roast pork with herbs, mushroom risotto.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Giardino

Cantina Giardino was founded in Ariano Irpino by Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola in the early 2000s, growing out of informal winemaking experiments among friends in the late 1990s at the cellar of a local figure known as Professor Giardino, after whom the winery takes its name. Antonio studied food technology before specializing in viticulture and oenology in Piedmont, and the couple channelled that knowledge into a project built around rescuing abandoned old-vine parcels that local farmers could no longer manage. Industrial agriculture had displaced many of Irpinia's indigenous varieties, and Antonio and Daniela set out to reverse that trajectory by sourcing and farming the region's oldest Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, and Coda di Volpe vines.

Today Cantina Giardino works approximately seven hectares spread across sixteen parcels throughout the province of Avellino, each with distinct soils and microclimates. Some vines exceed 100 years old. All farming is done by hand and follows organic principles, with no synthetic treatments used in the vineyard. In the cellar, Antonio ferments spontaneously without temperature control, allowing fermentation to continue for weeks or months depending on the vintage. Vessels include terracotta and sandstone amphorae, some handmade by Daniela using soil from the vineyards, alongside casks of local chestnut, cherry, and acacia wood. No fining, no filtration, and typically no added sulfites.

Each vintage's labels are created by a different local artist, giving every Cantina Giardino wine a visually distinct identity that reflects the same commitment to individuality as the winemaking itself.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Irpinia is the mountainous inland zone of Campania, lying within the province of Avellino in southern Italy. It sits well away from the region's famous coastline, at elevations that regularly exceed 500 metres, where winters are cold, summers are warm but not extreme, and the growing season extends into autumn, allowing Aglianico to ripen fully without losing acidity. This combination of altitude, temperature range, and volcanic soil makes Irpinia one of the most serious red wine territories in Italy.

The soils here are defined by ancient volcanic deposits: mineral-rich ash and pumice laid down over millennia, creating well-drained, low-fertility terrain that stresses vines into producing low yields of intensely flavored fruit. Montemarano, the village where the Drogone vines are planted, is one of Irpinia's most respected sites for Aglianico, recognized for the structured, minerally character its volcanic soils impart. The area sits within the broader territory of the Aglianico d'Irpinia IGP and is adjacent to the Taurasi DOCG zone, one of Italy's most celebrated red wine appellations.

Taurasi, made from 100% Aglianico and requiring at least three years aging before release, is the region's flagship. Fiano di Avellino DOCG and Greco di Tufo DOCG are the principal white wine appellations and rank among Italy's finest whites. Irpinia also suffered severely in the 1980 earthquake, an event that paradoxically preserved many old vineyards that would otherwise have been uprooted during the postwar modernization of Italian agriculture.
