Product description

G.D. Vajra Barbera d'Alba DOC 2024 draws fruit from six estate vineyards across the communes of Barolo, Novello, and Sinio, where diverse soil types—white marl, clay-iron, and older calcareous formations—contribute distinctive character to each parcel. Harvest spans up to three weeks to pick each site at optimal ripeness. G.D. Vajra Barbera d'Alba DOC 2024 ferments for approximately 20 days, then ages at least twelve months in stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels. The high-altitude vineyards at 400 meters and Barbera's thick skins result in slow ripening and vibrant natural acidity.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

G. D. Vajra

G.D. Vajra stands among Piedmont's most respected family estates, founded in 1972 when fifteen-year-old Aldo Vaira transformed a childhood passion into a life's work. Named for his father Giuseppe Domenico Vajra—since Aldo was too young to register the winery himself—the estate occupies Vergne, the highest village in the Barolo commune at 400 meters elevation.

Aldo pioneered organic viticulture in the region, achieving certification in 1971 when such practices were virtually unknown in Piedmont. He simultaneously developed massale selections of Nebbiolo and Dolcetto, revived the nearly forgotten Freisa grape in 1980, and planted the region's first Riesling in 1985. His wife Milena joined in the early 1980s, and together they built an estate now spanning approximately 40 hectares across prestigious sites.

The Barbera d'Alba draws from six estate vineyards, including parcels in Fossati and San Pietro (Barolo), Piedicucche (Novello), Bricco Bertone (Sinio), and Passau and Fontanì (Vergne). Some Barbera vines date to 1949, planted by Aldo's great-grandfather, representing some of the oldest on the property. These low-yielding strains, combined with high-altitude ripening and meticulous parcel-by-parcel harvesting over three weeks, produce wines of remarkable depth and freshness.

Today, Aldo and Milena work alongside their three children: Giuseppe handles winemaking, Francesca manages communications, and Isidoro oversees vineyards. The winemaking remains traditional—fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel, aging in a combination of steel and French oak, all designed to preserve Barbera's essential vibrancy while adding subtle complexity.

The family holds certifications in sustainable (SNQPI, 2016) and responsible (Equalitas, 2022) farming, continuing research into biodiversity and climate adaptation while preserving their historic old vines.

Wine region

Piedmont, Italy

Barbera d'Alba DOC occupies the hillsides surrounding the historic town of Alba in southern Piedmont, sharing terrain with the more celebrated Barolo and Barbaresco zones. While Nebbiolo commands the finest exposures, Barbera thrives at slightly higher elevations and on varied soil types, producing wines that rank among the most food-friendly in Italy.

The appellation encompasses vineyards across multiple communes, including Barolo, Novello, and Sinio. Each site contributes different characteristics: white marl soils deliver delicate aromatics and fresh red fruit notes, clay-iron compositions add volume and structure, while older calcareous Serravallian formations—locally called Helvetian soils—bring darker fruit tones, incense, and leather nuances. This geological diversity allows producers who source from multiple parcels to create wines of notable complexity.

Barbera is Piedmont's most planted red variety, though it has historically played second fiddle to Nebbiolo. The grape's defining trait is bright, racy acidity combined with minimal tannins, making it naturally suited for immediate enjoyment alongside rich regional cuisine. Unlike Nebbiolo, which requires years of aging, Barbera can be released young and drunk with pleasure, though age-worthy examples exist from the best producers.

The Alba designation generally indicates wines with more power and concentration than their Asti counterparts, benefiting from the Langhe's complex soils and continental climate. High-altitude vineyards—like those farmed by G.D. Vajra at 400 meters—experience cooler temperatures that preserve acidity while extending the growing season, allowing Barbera's thick-skinned grapes to ripen slowly and develop intense flavor concentration.

Modern winemaking has elevated Barbera's status considerably. Whether fermented in steel for freshness or aged in oak for structure, the variety now earns recognition as a serious wine capable of both everyday pleasure and special-occasion depth.
