Why we like this wine

This Cabernet Sauvignon displays red berry fruit, black plum, blackcurrant, and dark roast coffee aromas with herbaceous notes. The palate shows medium body with smooth tannins, spicy black fruit, and mineral undertones. Serve at 60-65°F; decant for 30 minutes to soften tannins. Pairs naturally with braai, the traditional South African barbecue.

LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
Product Description

Kumusha Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown in South Africa's Western Cape region under certified sustainable farming practices. Made by winemaker Tinashe, the wine undergoes natural fermentation in concrete vats with minimal intervention. Grapes are destemmed into old oak cask open-top fermenters. The wine ages for nine months in French oak barrels, with the final blend consisting of 60% oak-matured wine and 40% from concrete. The name "Kumusha" translates to "your home" or "your roots" in Zimbabwean Shona language.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package gets returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee to be determined based on shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive, we are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to re-route a package after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancelling fee – the amount depends on how big the order is. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat/frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. please let us know should you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Producer profile

Kumusha

Kumusha Wines is a South African wine producer founded in 2017 by Tinashe Nyamudoka, a renowned sommelier originally from Zimbabwe. The name "Kumusha" translates to "your home," "your roots," or "your origin" in the Zimbabwean Shona language.

Nyamudoka moved to South Africa in 2008 and built an impressive career in the hospitality industry, including serving as head sommelier at The Test Kitchen, where he won the Eat Out Wine Service Award in 2016. He launched Kumusha Wines with assistance from winemaker Attie Louw of Opstal Estate, starting with 1,200 cases of a Chenin-Semillon blend that sold out in under three months.

Kumusha Wines currently produces approximately 200,000 bottles annually, sourcing grapes from various Western Cape regions including Swartland, Slanghoek, and Sondagskloof. The brand focuses on minimal intervention winemaking and natural fermentation, allowing the wines' origins to come to the forefront.

The portfolio includes certified sustainable wines with varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, and Pinotage. The brand offers three tiers: premium wines designed for food pairing, mid-tier wines featuring unusual blends and obscure regions, and a lifestyle range for everyday consumers.

Kumusha Wines serves both domestic and international markets, with distribution in the United States, Kenya, Zimbabwe, the Netherlands, and Nigeria. Nyamudoka is also an executive board member of the Black Cellar Club (BLACC), a non-profit organization supporting Black winemakers and sommeliers globally. The brand aims to create premium-quality wines that are both affordable and accessible to a wider audience.

Wine region

Western Cape, South Africa

The Western Cape is South Africa's premier wine-producing region, accounting for over 90% of the country's wine production. Located in the southwestern corner of the African continent with Cape Town as its central hub, this diverse area encompasses multiple distinct wine districts and wards, each offering unique terroir and microclimates.

Swartland Wine Region

Swartland is situated approximately 65 kilometers north of Cape Town between the towns of Malmesbury and Piketberg. The region's name, meaning "black land" in Afrikaans, derives from the native renosterbos plant that darkens after rainfall. Swartland is known for producing rich, fruit-driven wines, particularly from Shiraz, Chenin Blanc, and Pinotage grape varieties. The area features varied topography with vineyards on steep mountain foothills and gently rolling hillsides. The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cooling Atlantic Ocean influences. Swartland has gained international recognition for its old vines and minimal intervention winemaking approaches.

Slanghoek Valley

The Slanghoek Valley is located in the Breedekloof district within the Breede River Valley, situated 800 meters above sea level and surrounded by the Slanghoek Mountains. This valley lies approximately 20 kilometers from Worcester and 90 kilometers from Cape Town. The region's elevated position, fertile, varied soils, and unique microclimate contribute to distinctive wine characteristics. Established in 1951, Slanghoek is particularly recognized for producing award-winning Chenin Blanc along with other varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.

Sondagskloof Ward

Sondagskloof, also known as Sunday's Glen, is a relatively small ward within the Walker Bay district of the Cape South Coast region. Located approximately 40 kilometers from Hermanus between Stanford and Napier, this cool-climate area benefits significantly from Atlantic Ocean proximity. The cooling maritime breezes create an extended growing season, allowing grapes to develop complex flavors while maintaining balanced acidity. Sondagskloof is particularly noted for elegant Bordeaux varietals, especially Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, along with refined Syrah expressions.
