Fried shallots, garlic and chilies, which is sambal goreng and which is closer to a crisp condiment than a sauce. It works three ways: as a base to cook from, as something spooned over at the end, or straight out of the jar, which is how most of it gets eaten.

Made by hand the old Bali way by two sisters who started selling food out of a Los Angeles driveway during the pandemic.

The Brand

Bungkus Bagus

Bungkus Bagus means good package, and it began in a Los Angeles driveway. Sisters Celene and Tara Carrara grew up in Bali, both lost their jobs when the pandemic hit, ended up living under one roof again, and started selling banana-leaf bundles of rice, curry and vegetables out the front of the house.

It went from that driveway to the LA Times 101 Best Restaurants list. Their own description of what they were chasing is precise: warm rice, salty fish and a spoonful of sambal on the steps of their father's carving shop in Ubud.

The sambal goreng is the hero, made the old Bali way, by hand.

Pantry FAQs

Pantry items are fulfilled by our partner retailer in California, so they ship on their own and will not arrive in the same box as your wine. Order both and you should expect two parcels, often on different days.

You will receive tracking for the pantry parcel within 3-4 business days.

Wine requires an adult signature on delivery. Pantry items do not, so they can be left at your door like any ordinary parcel.

Yes. Nothing here is tied to a wine purchase. Shipping for pantry items is calculated separately at checkout.

Most of what we carry is shelf stable until it is opened, and would rather sit in a cool dark cupboard than on a sunny counter. Anything that needs refrigerating once opened says so on the label.
