Tasting notes

At 11% ABV with no added sulfites, this rosé is unusually light and tense for the southern Languedoc — all small red berry fruit and saline-tinged acidity with a dry, almost grippy finish from the Carignan. The Macabeu component is uncommon in rosé blends and adds a subtle floral and citrus edge that separates it from the usual Provence template.

Un Grain de Folie is a dry rosé from Marc Castan of Domaine Mamaruta, made from 60% Syrah, 30% Carignan, and 10% Macabeu grown on the Aude littoral in the Fitou Maritime zone. The vineyards sit between La Palme and Leucate, on soils ranging from clay-limestone to rolled pebbles bordering the La Palme saltwater lagoon. At 11% ABV, this is a deliberately light, high-acid expression of a warm Mediterranean site — the result of early harvesting to preserve freshness and natural acidity.

In the cellar, grapes are directly pressed with a light 12-hour settling, then fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and aged for six months on the lees in fiberglass vats. The wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered, with no added sulfites. The Vin de France designation allows Marc the flexibility to blend across varieties outside the stricter rules of Fitou AOC.

The nose leads with small red berries — strawberry, raspberry — alongside a faint herbal, garrigue note typical of the Corbières maritimes. The palate is dry and juicy with brisk acidity and a light, almost crunchy texture from the Carignan. The Macabeu adds a subtle floral lift and keeps the finish clean and refreshing.

Works well with grilled fish, especially daurade or sea bass, where the wine's salinity and acidity cut through the fat. Also strong alongside tapenade, anchoïade, or any olive-oil-forward antipasto. Serve lightly chilled at around 52-55°F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Domaine Mamaruta

Marc Castan grew up in Narbonne and spent his childhood in the Corbières maritimes. After studying viticulture, he took over his grandfather's vines in La Palme and made his first wines under the Domaine Mamaruta label in 2009, having previously sold grapes to the local cooperative. The name Mamaruta means ladybug in Romanian, a reference from Marc's early years working in the vines.

The domaine covers 14 to 15 hectares spread across 30 small plots in La Palme and Leucate, within the Fitou Maritime AOC. Soils vary from clay-limestone to rolled pebbles bordering the La Palme lagoon. Seventy percent of the vines are trained in gobelet (bush vine), with the remainder on Guyot simple or Cordon de Royat. Yields are low, averaging 16 to 20 hl/ha. Marc farms organically and applies biodynamic practices — including hedgerow planting for biodiversity, hand maintenance of all plots, and treatments limited to sulfur, green clay, and plant decoctions such as chamomile, nettle, and lavender. Highland cattle graze the parcels as natural weeders. Harvests begin in mid-August to retain maximum acidity.

All wines are made without temperature control, fermented spontaneously with native yeasts, and bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfites. For the rosé, grapes are directly pressed after a short settling of around 12 hours, then aged on the lees in fiberglass vats for six months before bottling in early spring.

Wine region

Languedoc-Roussillon, France

Fitou is the oldest AOC for red wine in the Languedoc, granted in 1948. The appellation is split into two geographically distinct zones separated by roughly 30 kilometers: Fitou Maritime, a coastal enclave bordering the saltwater lagoons near La Palme, Leucate, Caves, Fitou, and Treilles; and Fitou Montagne, an inland zone in the Hautes-Corbières near Tuchan and Cascastel. The Maritime zone, where Domaine Mamaruta is located, sits on low-lying clay-limestone terraces flanked by the Mediterranean and the étang de La Palme. The area is swept by persistent winds off the sea, which reduce disease pressure and help maintain natural acidity in the grapes.

The dominant grape varieties in Fitou are Carignan, Grenache Noir, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. Soils in the Maritime zone range from rolled pebbles near the lagoons to harder limestone outcrops along the coastal cliffs. The Mediterranean climate delivers hot, dry summers and very low rainfall, moderated near the coast by humidity from the lagoons. Although the Fitou AOC covers only red wine, many producers in the zone — including Domaine Mamaruta — bottle their rosés and whites under the broader Vin de France or Languedoc designations, which allows greater blending flexibility.
