Tasting notes

This is a textbook example of what Burgenland does well at the everyday level: bright red fruit, soft tannins, and genuine spice from Blaufrankisch, all at a weight that invites a second glass. The sandy limestone soils of Gols give it a lightness of touch that heavier-framed Austrian reds often lack.

Out is Judith Beck's entry-level red blend from Gols, in the Neusiedlersee sub-region of Burgenland. The name is deliberate: Beck describes it as "out of appellation, free natural wine" — the Zweigelt and Blaufrankisch blend falls outside the Neusiedlersee DAC's Zweigelt-only rules, so it is labeled simply as Burgenland. Grapes come from biodynamically farmed vineyards with vines averaging 15 years of age, planted on sandy limestone soils known locally as Seewinkelschotter.

Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, beginning in stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged in used neutral acacia barrels and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, contributing to the wine's soft texture. Sulfite additions are minimal, at or near 10 mg/L total.

The result is a bright, medium-bodied red with soft tannins, lively acidity, and fruit-forward character — strawberry, plum, and raspberry with a spicy, savoury finish from the Blaufrankisch component. It is meant to be approachable young, served slightly cool, and consumed without ceremony.

Works well with charcuterie, roast chicken, or pork dishes with fruit-based sauces. The Blaufrankisch spice holds up to moderately rich foods without overpowering lighter preparations. Serve at 55-60F for best results.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Judith Beck

Weingut Judith Beck is based in Gols, in the Neusiedlersee sub-region of Burgenland. The estate was founded in 1976 by Judith's parents, Matthias and Christine Beck, who increased vineyard plantings and focused the farm on wine production. Judith made her first vintage in 2001 and assumed full control of the winery in 2004. Before returning to Gols, she studied viticulture at the Klosterneuburg College and gained international experience at Chateau Cos d'Estournel in Bordeaux, Braida in Piedmont, and Errazuriz in Chile.

The estate currently farms 20 owned hectares and leases an additional 10 hectares, all managed biodynamically or organically. Biodynamic conversion began in 2007, inspired by the principles of Rudolf Steiner, and the first certified biodynamic vintage was 2010 through the respekt-BIODYN association. Vineyard sites include Altenberg, Gabarinza, Salzberg, and Schafleiten. Vines are planted at densities up to 7,000 vines per hectare. Soils range from sandy loam and limestone on lower sites to gravel on the plateau. Judith applies biodynamic preparations, uses the estate's own compost, cultivates grass between vine rows, and follows biodynamic timing calendars. She is also a member of Pannobile, the Gols-based growers' association that champions indigenous varieties.

Winemaking is minimal intervention throughout. All fruit is hand-harvested. Fermentation relies entirely on indigenous yeasts. Wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered, with sulfite additions kept at low or zero levels depending on the cuvee. The cellar holds a mix of stainless steel tanks, large used acacia barrels from Judith's grandparents, clay amphora, and various barrel sizes. For the Out blend, spontaneous fermentation takes place in stainless steel, and the wine is aged in used neutral acacia before bottling.

Wine region

Burgenland, Austria

Burgenland sits in easternmost Austria along the Hungarian border, its vineyards shaped by the Pannonian continental climate: hot, dry summers and cold winters with low rainfall. Lake Neusiedl, the largest steppe lake in Central Europe, moderates this extreme climate by releasing stored daytime warmth at night and generating wind across the surrounding vineyards throughout the growing season. The lake's moderating influence extends the growing season and promotes the development of cool fruit notes in the grapes. The region covers roughly 13,840 hectares of vines divided across four sub-regions: Neusiedlersee, Neusiedlersee-Hugelland, Mittelburgenland, and Sudburgenland.

The Neusiedlersee sub-region, on the eastern and warmer side of Lake Neusiedl, is Austria's warmest wine-growing area and its first to harvest each year. Soils here range from sandy loam and lime-rich gravel to limestone, with the flat terrain around Gols giving way to a gently sloping hillside and plateau. The Neusiedlersee DAC designation, established with the 2012 vintage, covers fruity dry reds made exclusively from Zweigelt. Blends incorporating Blaufrankisch — the other key red variety of the region — fall outside DAC rules and are labeled under the broader Burgenland appellation. Mittelburgenland DAC, further south, specializes in Blaufrankisch and carries a distinct identity from the Neusiedlersee sub-region.
