Tasting notes

The qvevri fermentation and elevage give Obelus a salty, earthy texture that you rarely find in California reds. Grilled strawberry and blackberry on the nose shift to funky, savory depth on the palate, with medium-high acidity keeping everything moving. It is a genuinely singular bottle from one of California's most unconventional winemakers.

Obelus is a field-inspired Southern Rhone blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, and 20% Mourvedre, sourced from organically farmed vineyards in Calaveras County, Sierra Foothills. The three varieties are co-fermented together in a combination of qvevri (traditional Georgian terracotta amphorae) and macro bin, then pressed after 7 to 10 days of skin contact. After pressing, the wine moves into qvevri and neutral oak for elevage. No additions or subtractions at any point in the process.

Caleb Leisure operates out of the Coturri Winery facility in Glen Ellen, Sonoma, where in 2017 he buried 10 authentic Georgian qvevri in the earthen cellar. The qvevri are lined with beeswax, which has antibacterial properties and supports natural clarification. Buried underground, they hold a constant cool temperature that moderates fermentation heat and allows the wine to settle without intervention. Leisure is widely cited as the only California winemaker using authentic Georgian qvevri in this manner.

Calaveras County sits within the Sierra Foothills AVA, east of the San Joaquin Valley at the base of the Sierra Nevada. Vineyards here range from 500 to 3,000 feet in elevation, with soils of decomposed granite and volcanic material that drain well and force vines to root deeply. Warm days and cool alpine nights produce significant diurnal temperature swings that preserve acidity and concentrate flavor. Rhone varieties like Grenache, Cinsault, and Mourvedre are well-suited to these conditions.

Expect red and dark fruit alongside earthy and funky savory notes. The qvevri-driven winemaking adds texture and a salty mineral quality, while the Cinsault keeps the blend lifted and aromatic. Mourvedre grounds the whole thing with structure and a meaty undercurrent. Medium-high acidity and low sulfur make this a lively, food-friendly bottle with real personality.

The earthy, savory character of this wine pairs well with roasted lamb, grilled pork shoulder, or duck confit. The salty, funky notes from qvevri aging work nicely alongside aged hard cheeses or charcuterie boards. The acidity and lighter tannin structure also make it a solid match for mushroom-based dishes or lentil stews.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Caleb Leisure

Caleb Leisure launched his eponymous wine project in Glen Ellen, California. In 2014, after time in academia and the cheese industry, and following internships in the Languedoc-Roussillon and Jura regions of France, he returned to California and sought out mentorship in the local natural wine scene. He landed an apprenticeship with Tony Coturri of Coturri Winery in Glen Ellen, one of the foundational figures in California natural winemaking. Working alongside Coturri gave Leisure deep grounding in zero-additive farming and winemaking principles.

Leisure sources fruit from organically and biodynamically grown vineyards across California, including Calaveras County in the Sierra Foothills. He uses no additions or subtractions at any point in the winemaking process, meaning no added sulfur, no fining agents, and no adjustments. All wines are unfiltered and unfined.

The defining feature of Leisure's winemaking is his use of authentic Georgian qvevri. In 2017, he buried 10 qvevri in the earthen cellar at the Coturri Winery facility in Glen Ellen. The vessels are lined with beeswax, which provides antibacterial protection and supports natural clarification. Buried underground, they remain at a stable cool temperature throughout fermentation. Leisure is consistently cited as the only California winemaker using authentic Georgian qvevri in this way, and his approach draws direct inspiration from traditional Georgian winemaking, including whole-cluster and whole-berry fermentation with no additions.

Wine region

Sierra Foothills, USA

Calaveras County sits within the broader Sierra Foothills AVA, east of the San Joaquin Valley at the base of the Sierra Nevada range. Vineyards are planted at elevations ranging from 500 to 3,000 feet, with soils composed primarily of decomposed granite and volcanic material. Both soil types drain extremely well and are low in nutrients, pushing vines to develop deep root systems and produce concentrated, small-berried fruit.

The climate is defined by warm to hot days during the growing season and significant cooling at night as alpine air descends from the Sierra Nevada peaks. This diurnal temperature swing helps the grapes retain natural acidity despite the warmth. Rhone varieties including Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvedre, and Syrah perform particularly well here, thriving in the heat while benefiting from the nighttime cooling. Calaveras has no dedicated sub-AVA of its own but falls within the larger Sierra Foothills AVA, which spans eight counties across Northern California.
