New Dawn Red Syrah 2024

New
Why we like it

This Syrah displays fragrant aromatics with dark fruit notes and spice characteristics. The wine shows precision and balance on the palate. Serve at 60-65°F; decanting for 30 minutes enhances the wine's aromatic profile. Pairs well with grilled lamb chops, where the wine's structure complements the meat's richness and char.

LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
Description

New Dawn Red by Rudger van Wyk is a Syrah crafted from grapes sourced from Elizma Visser's vineyard in South Africa's Breedekloof region. This 2024 vintage represents van Wyk's first solo release under his New Dawn label, created in partnership with US importer Baobab Wines. Van Wyk applies minimal intervention winemaking techniques honed during his tenure at Stark-Condé and training in Burgundy. The Breedekloof's warm days and cool nights provide favorable conditions for Syrah cultivation, allowing the fruit to develop concentrated flavors while maintaining natural acidity.

Tasting notes

Deep ruby color in the glass. The nose reveals dark berries, black pepper, and subtle floral notes. On the palate, concentrated fruit flavors blend with savory spice elements and fine tannins. The finish shows freshness and length, reflecting the Breedekloof terroir and van Wyk's refined winemaking approach.

Food pairings

Grilled lamb, beef stew, roasted duck, South African braai meats, venison, coq au vin, mushroom risotto, aged Manchego cheese, charcuterie boards.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package gets returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee to be determined based on shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive, we are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to re-route a package after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancelling fee – the amount depends on how big the order is. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat/frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. please let us know should you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Producer profile

Château Coujan

Rudger van Wyk is a South African winemaker from George on the country's south coast. He began his wine studies at Stellenbosch University in 2010 and graduated in 2013. Van Wyk participated in the Cape Winemakers Guild Protégé program, which provided mentorship and international exposure.

In 2015, van Wyk worked at Nitida winery in Durbanville and completed a harvest in Burgundy, France. He joined Stark-Condé in Stellenbosch as assistant winemaker in 2015, later becoming head winemaker until 2023. In 2018, van Wyk received the Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year award, becoming the first person of colour to win this recognition.

During his time at Stark-Condé, van Wyk co-created the Kara-Tara brand with estate owner José Conde, focusing on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from cool-climate vineyards across the Western Cape. The wines were exported to the UK and US markets.

In January 2024, van Wyk became head winemaker at Doolhof Wine Estate in Wellington. He launched his solo label, New Dawn Wines, in partnership with US importer Baobab Wines, with the first vintage bottled in December 2024. In November 2024, van Wyk opened Novel Coffee and Wine Bar in Cape Town's Salt River neighborhood with business partner Norman Drake.

Wine region

Breedekloof , South Africa

Breedekloof is a wine-producing district located in South Africa's Western Cape, situated within the larger Breede River Valley region. The area lies approximately 90 kilometers from Cape Town, positioned between Worcester to the east and Paarl to the west. The Slanghoek Mountains form the western boundary, separating Breedekloof from Paarl, while the Badsberg Mountain divides the district into two official wards: Goudini and Slanghoek.

The region encompasses the areas of Rawsonville, Slanghoek, Goudini, and Breerivier. Breedekloof receives approximately 700-980mm of annual rainfall, primarily during winter months, classifying it as a high-rainfall area by South African standards. The Mediterranean climate features warm days moderated by afternoon shadows from the surrounding mountains, which create cooler evenings. Cold winters occasionally bring snow that extends into late spring, contributing to delayed grape ripening compared to other South African wine regions.

Breedekloof's soil composition varies significantly across the valley. Weathered sandstone dominates the hills, while the valley floor contains sandy loam, deep heavy black soils, and sandy shale soils found in old riverbeds. The Worcester Fault, a geological feature running through the valley, influences this soil diversity.

Chenin Blanc represents the most planted grape variety in Breedekloof, with the region producing approximately one-third of South Africa's Chenin Blanc wines. Other significant varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz (Syrah), Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Hanepoot (Muscat of Alexandria). The area has gained recognition for both dry table wines and fortified or dessert wines.

The Breedekloof Wine Route was established in 2002, making it South Africa's youngest official wine route. Currently, 22 wineries participate in the route, which forms part of the larger Route 62 Wine Route. Most estates are family-owned operations, with several farms managed by sixth or seventh-generation families. In 2014, local winemakers formed the Breedekloof Makers initiative to showcase premium Chenin Blanc wines produced from single vineyards and old vines. Member wineries must produce at least one premium Chenin Blanc using barrel fermentation, amphora clay pots, or cement eggs.
