Tasting notes

This is a rare rosé built from the old-vine indigenous grapes of the Lake Bolsena crater, where volcanic sand soils give the wine a distinctive saline, mineral edge alongside fresh strawberry and wild cherry fruit. The two-day skin contact on the Canaiolo Nero alone is enough to lift color and texture without tipping it into orange wine territory — it sits in a precise, food-friendly middle ground.

Mistione Rosato is a field-blend rosé from Il Vinco, made from four indigenous varieties grown on volcanic and sandy soils on the southern shore of Lago di Bolsena in Lazio: Canaiolo Nero (red), Procanico, Rossetto, and Malvasia Bianca Lunga (all white). The name Mistione means "mix" or "blend" in Italian, which describes the wine precisely. The vineyards sit around 380 to 400 meters above sea level in the communes of Capodimonte and Marta, Viterbo province.

Each variety is fermented separately in concrete tanks using wild, native yeasts. The Canaiolo Nero is left on the skins for two days to extract color and structure, while the white varieties are pressed and fermented without extended skin contact. After fermentation, the wines are aged six months in stainless steel and fiberglass with no added sulfites before blending and bottling. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The result is a dry, lightly copper-pink rosé with aromas of fresh strawberry, wild cherry, and a saline mineral edge drawn from the volcanic soil. On the palate it is fresh and light-bodied with lively acidity and a clean, fruit-forward finish. It drinks well slightly chilled and is built for the table, not the cellar.

Serve slightly chilled around 50-54F alongside grilled branzino, steamed clams, or a simple caprese with fresh mozzarella. The wine's saline acidity also cuts through fried zucchini blossoms or Roman-style fritto misto. Works well as an aperitivo with charcuterie and mild aged sheep's milk cheese.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Il Vinco

Il Vinco was founded in 2014 by three friends from agricultural backgrounds: Daniele Manoni and Nicola Brenciaglia, both olive oil producers, and Marco Fucini, a cattle farmer. Their first vintage was 2015. The winery is located between the communes of Marta and Montefiascone on the southern shore of Lago di Bolsena, in the Viterbo province of Lazio. The name Il Vinco refers to the pliable willow branch historically used to tie vines to stakes in the vineyard.

The estate covers 3 hectares of volcanic sandy-loam soils at approximately 380 to 400 meters above sea level, planted to Canaiolo Nero, Grechetto Rosso, Procanico, Rossetto, and Malvasia Bianca Lunga. The project began with the purchase of 2.5 hectares of old-vine Canaiolo Nero that had been nearly abandoned, with the goal of restoring indigenous varieties that had been overlooked in favor of international grapes. Winemaker Andrea Occhipinti provided use of his cellar in the early years. Since 2017, the team has farmed biodynamically, using only small amounts of copper and sulfur.

Winemaking at Il Vinco is minimal by design. Fermentations are spontaneous, relying entirely on indigenous yeasts, with no temperature control. Vessels include concrete tanks, stainless steel, fiberglass, and occasionally chestnut barrels. No fining or filtration takes place before bottling. Sulfite additions are either zero or at the lowest possible level depending on the wine. Production is approximately 10,000 bottles per year across all wines.

Wine region

Lazio, Italy

Lago di Bolsena is the largest volcanic crater lake in Europe, located in the Viterbo province of northern Lazio. The surrounding hillsides, part of the ancient Vulsini volcanic complex, are covered in tuff, volcanic ash, and sandy volcanic soils that drain well and retain heat. Vineyards in the area sit between 250 and 450 meters above sea level, with lake breezes moderating summer temperatures and helping to maintain natural acidity in the grapes.

The formal appellation of the area is Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone DOC, established in 1966, which covers seven communes encircling the lake including Montefiascone, Capodimonte, Marta, and Bolsena. The DOC is built primarily on Trebbiano Toscano (Procanico) and Malvasia Bianca. Many of the region's most interesting producers, including Il Vinco, Le Coste, and Andrea Occhipinti, work outside the DOC framework, bottling as Vino da Tavola to use native yeasts, extended macerations, and zero sulfite additions that the appellation rules do not easily accommodate.
