Why we like it

I like this wine because the Cabernet Franc and Grolleau blend creates vibrant red berry flavors with fine spicy notes and pleasant aromatic complexity. The juicy mouth is full yet slightly acidic, offering fresh red fruit character with crushed dried flowers. This light to medium-bodied wine shows excellent balance and drinkability. Serve at 60-65°F without decanting. Perfect with French coq au vin and herb-roasted vegetables.

LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
Description

Les Tetes Tete Rouge is made from 90% Cabernet Franc and 10% Grolleau grapes grown in the Touraine region of the Loire Valley, France. The wine is produced by four friends - Nicolas, Philippe, Baptiste, and Vivien - from 25-year-old vines planted on sand and clay soils. Hand-harvested grapes undergo direct pressing followed by spontaneous fermentation in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged in concrete without fining or filtering, with minimal sulfur addition. This organic and biodynamic wine represents fresh, friendship-focused winemaking.

Tasting notes

Cherry color with bright clarity. The nose reveals red fruits, fine spicy notes, and floral aromatics from the Loire terroir. On the palate, juicy and full with pleasant acidity, fresh red berry flavors, and an aromatic finish that showcases the Cabernet Franc character.

Food pairings

Excellent with grilled meats, charcuterie, roasted poultry, soft cheeses, and traditional French ratatouille from Provence.

Producer profile

Les Tetes

Les Tetes is a collaborative natural wine project founded by four friends in the Loire Valley of France who share a passion for creating authentic, friendship-centered wines. Based in the village of Le Pressoir in Touraine Azay-le-Rideau, Nicolas Grosbois, Philippe Mesnier, Baptiste, and Vivien established this venture with a simple philosophy: "Les Tetes is about friendship, and wines you drink with friends."

The project focuses on producing fresh, fruity, and competitively-priced wines using organic and biodynamic farming practices. Working from Nicolas's cellar in Panzoult, near the birthplace of Honoré de Balzac and Alexander Calder's workshop, the team sources grapes from carefully selected vineyards across France. Their vineyards are situated in the unspoiled landscape surrounding Château de Rigny-Ussé, where they cultivate traditional Loire Valley varieties including Cabernet Franc, Grolleau, Chenin Blanc, and other regional grapes.

Les Tetes employs minimal intervention winemaking techniques, utilizing native yeasts for spontaneous fermentation and adding only minimal sulfur. Their wines are produced without fining or filtering, allowing the authentic character of each terroir to shine through. The collective creates various cuvées including their popular Tete Rouge (a blend of Cabernet Franc and Grolleau), Tete Blanche (featuring Chenin Blanc and other white varieties), and Tete Orange (their skin-contact wine).

This collaborative approach represents a new generation of Loire Valley winemaking, where friendship, sustainability, and terroir expression take precedence over commercial considerations. Les Tetes wines capture the essence of convivial drinking while maintaining a serious commitment to organic viticulture and natural winemaking principles.

Wine region

Loire Valley, France

The Loire Valley, often called "the Garden of France," is one of the country's most prestigious and diverse wine regions, stretching over 600 miles along the Loire River from the Atlantic coast to central France. This UNESCO World Heritage site encompasses multiple appellations including Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Muscadet, Vouvray, and Chinon, each producing distinctive wines that reflect their unique terroirs.

The region's continental climate, moderated by the Loire River's influence, creates ideal conditions for both white and red wine production. The diverse soils range from limestone and chalk in Sancerre to tuffeau (Loire limestone) in Touraine and schist in Muscadet, contributing to the remarkable variety of wine styles produced throughout the valley.

Loire Valley wines showcase exceptional indigenous grape varieties. Sauvignon Blanc thrives in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, producing mineral-driven whites with citrus and herbaceous notes. Chenin Blanc, the region's most versatile grape, creates everything from bone-dry wines in Vouvray to luscious dessert wines. Cabernet Franc dominates red wine production, particularly in Chinon and Bourgueil, yielding elegant wines with red fruit flavors and distinctive herbal characteristics.

The region has become a leader in sustainable viticulture, with many producers embracing organic and biodynamic farming practices. From crisp Muscadet paired with fresh oysters to age-worthy Sancerre and food-friendly Chinon, Loire Valley wines offer remarkable diversity and food compatibility.
