Tasting notes

Pecorino with two to three days of skin contact is a rare thing: it keeps the grape's signature lemon-citrus acidity and white peach fruit intact while adding a faint tannic texture and amber depth you won't find in a conventional bottling. At 12% ABV it is genuinely refreshing, not a workout.

Lello is 100% Pecorino from Luca Bevilacqua's family vineyards in Atessa, a small town in the Sangro River Valley in the province of Chieti, southern Abruzzo. The vines are around 30 years old, trained in the traditional Pergola Abruzzese system, and planted on clay soils at roughly 300 meters elevation. Farming is organic, using only copper and sulfur in small quantities when needed.

After harvest, the grapes undergo two to three days of skin maceration before fermentation with wild yeasts in neutral fiberglass tanks. The wine ages for approximately six months in fiberglass, then goes into bottle unfined, unfiltered, and without any added sulfites. The short skin contact gives the wine a faint amber tint and a light tannic grip without overshadowing the grape's natural freshness.

Pecorino is an indigenous white variety native to the Adriatic coast of central Italy — Abruzzo and Le Marche — that was nearly extinct by the mid-20th century due to its naturally low yields. In the glass it delivers high natural acidity, a mineral salinity, and stone fruit character that makes it one of the more interesting whites in the region. Luca's low-intervention approach keeps the wine lean, bright, and direct.

Luca Bevilacqua began making wine in 2006 from plots inherited from his father. Total production across all his wines is fewer than 10,000 bottles. He works as a professional sommelier alongside winemaking, handling harvest and vinification during his days off.

The high acidity and light tannic grip make this a natural match for seafood: grilled branzino, Adriatic-style brodetto fish stew, or raw oysters. It also works well alongside antipasti, fresh goat cheese, or herb-forward dishes like a white bean and sage bruschetta.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Luca Bevilacqua

Luca Bevilacqua is a professional sommelier based in Atessa, in the Sangro River Valley of the province of Chieti. He began making wine in 2006 from vineyards inherited from his father, who had previously made wine for friends and family. He continues to work as a sommelier alongside winemaking, carrying out harvest and vinification during time off from his day job.

The estate consists of roughly two hectares of vines, around 30 to 35 years old, planted on clay soils at approximately 300 meters elevation and trained in the traditional Pergola Abruzzese system. Farming is organic — the vineyards have never received synthetic chemicals, only copper and sulfur in small quantities when needed. Total production across all wines is fewer than 10,000 bottles per year.

Luca works almost exclusively with indigenous Abruzzo varieties: Trebbiano, Montepulciano, Passerina, and Pecorino. His winemaking approach is zero-zero: spontaneous fermentation, no fining, no filtration, no added sulfites. Fermentation and aging take place in neutral fiberglass tanks, preserving freshness and primary fruit character. The LAB project name comes from the initials of his two sons, Lorenzo Amerigo and Leonardo Andrea Bevilacqua.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo runs east from the Apennine Mountains to the Adriatic Sea, halfway down the Italian peninsula. The Apennines block storms from the west, while the Adriatic moderates coastal temperatures; inland sites like the Sangro River Valley experience a more continental climate with hot summers, cold winters, and significant diurnal temperature shifts. The vineyards around Atessa in the province of Chieti sit in the calcareous clay river valleys that flow from the mountains toward the sea, at elevations between 200 and 400 meters.

Chieti is Abruzzo's largest wine-producing province, accounting for roughly 75% of regional output. Key appellations include Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC (the regional rosé), and the Colline Teramane Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOCG in the north. The region also hosts eight IGT designations, including Terre di Chieti and Colli del Sangro, which cover many of the natural and minimal-intervention producers working with indigenous varieties like Pecorino, Passerina, and Cococciola alongside the dominant Montepulciano and Trebbiano.
