La Vigne du Perron

La Vigne du Perron Sérène Blanche 2022

Regular price $60.00
LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
  • Style: Dry, medium to full-bodied white with firm acidity, aromatic complexity, and genuine structural depth; the direct press approach preserves freshness while barrel aging adds texture and a faint oxidative note
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Altesse (Roussette / Sérène Blanche), an indigenous variety of eastern France; steep limestone slopes above Villebois, Bugey, Ain; chemical-free viticulture with occasional biodynamic treatments; Guyot-trained vines, low yields, hand-harvested
  • Winemaking: Direct press without destemming; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in fiberglass tanks; aged approximately 12 months in old neutral oak barrels (average 5 years old); bottled without filtration or any additions including no added sulfur
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 52–55°F; 15 to 20 minutes' decanting recommended to open the wine; the structure and acidity make it a candidate for a few years of bottle aging
  • Pairing: Poulet à la crème de l'Ain
  • Similar to: A structured Roussette de Savoie or a mineral-driven Jura white such as Savagnin ouillé, with the characteristic weight and floral complexity of Altesse

New
Tasting notes

Poulet à la crème de l'Ain, raclette, grilled trout, sushi, aged Comté, escargots with garlic butter, crayfish bisque.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

La Vigne du Perron

La Vigne du Perron is the work of François Grinand, based in Villebois, a small village on the banks of the Rhône in the Ain. Grinand left a career as a piano teacher at a prestigious conservatory in 1993 to make wine in his hometown, initially with limited resources and no formal winemaking background. A series of difficult harvests led to bankruptcy in 2007, but the domaine was rescued when two Belgian wine enthusiasts who admired his work purchased his entire stock and helped relaunch the project. By 2009 it had been reborn, now operating as both Domaine du Perron and La Vigne du Perron.

The estate covers around two to three hectares of steep hillside vineyards on the limestone slopes above Villebois, farmed without pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers, with low yields maintained through Guyot training and deliberate management. Grinand grows Pinot Noir, Gamay, Mondeuse, Altesse, and Chardonnay, and also buys organically farmed fruit from a handful of trusted neighbors, most notably sharing a Savoie vineyard planted to Jacquère with Jean-Yves Péron. The vines range from relatively young to over 60 years old, with an average age of around 20 years.

In the cellar, Grinand approaches each variety differently. Gamay and Pinot Noir are fermented whole-cluster in upright fiberglass vats. Mondeuse is destemmed. All white grapes, including the Altesse for Sérène Blanche, are pressed directly without destemming, using an old upright press with a rock basin. Wines then ferment with indigenous yeasts and age in old neutral oak barrels for 12 to 18 months. Since 2010, every wine leaves the cellar without filtration and without any additions.

Wine region

Bugey, France

Bugey is a small wine region in the Ain department of eastern France, positioned between the Jura to the north, Savoie to the east, Beaujolais to the west, and the northern Rhône to the south. It sits at the southern tip of the limestone-rich Jura massif, where the terrain descends toward the Rhône river valley in a sequence of steep hillsides and narrow gorges. The region is often associated with its sparkling pink wines made from Gamay, which have been its most commercially visible product, but it also produces still reds and whites of real character from both local and neighboring varieties.

The geology in and around Villebois, where La Vigne du Perron's vineyards are situated, is primarily limestone and calcareous scree mixed with alluvial silts on the lower slopes. This substrate imparts the wines with a mineral tension common to the broader limestone belt that stretches from Burgundy through the Jura and into this corner of the Ain. The steep terracing of the hillsides above Villebois limits mechanization and demands hand-harvesting, which has historically discouraged the kind of commercial viticulture seen in flatter, more accessible zones.

Altesse, the grape behind Sérène Blanche, is one of the region's most important white varieties. It is thought to be indigenous to the area around Lake Geneva and appears across both Savoie and Bugey under the synonyms Roussette and Sérène Blanche. At its best, it produces dry whites with real aromatic complexity, bergamot and hazelnut character, firm acidity, and the capacity to age well in bottle. The Roussette du Bugey AOC covers still Altesse wines from the region, though some producers, including La Vigne du Perron, release their wines as Vin de France to preserve flexibility in labeling.
