Sustainable Handmade Low-sulfites Low-intervention
Description

Bichi's La Gorda Yori is an orange wine produced in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico. The grapes are sourced from a dry-farmed vineyard planted in the 1980s on granitic soils, which was abandoned shortly after planting and recently revived by Noel Téllez and his team. The primary grape variety is Chenin Blanc, with small amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Moscatel blended in to balance the ripeness of the Chenin. The grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented with wild yeasts in concrete tinajas (amphoras), with three months of skin contact before pressing. The wine is raised over the winter and bottled without fining, filtration, or added sulfur dioxide, adhering to natural winemaking principles.

Tasting notes

La Gorda Yori offers aromas of herbs, sandalwood, and orchard fruit balanced with refreshing acidity. It has a kombucha-like feel on the palate, with fermentation notes reminiscent of bread crumbs, providing a unique and enjoyable drinking experience.

Food pairings

This orange wine pairs well with salads containing walnuts, farro dishes, or anything featuring eggplant. Its acidity and complex flavor profile complement these foods.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package gets returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee to be determined based on shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive, we are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to re-route a package after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancelling fee – the amount depends on how big the order is. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat/frost-related issues. for heat we offer ice-packs upon request. please let us know should you think that there could be heat-related issues. again, if we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Producer profile

Bichi

Bichi, established in 2014 by brothers Noel and Jair Téllez, is a pioneering natural wine producer in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico. The name "Bichi," meaning "naked" in the Sonoran Yaqui dialect, reflects their commitment to minimal-intervention winemaking. The Téllez family, originally from Sonora, relocated to Baja, California, to explore the region's rich viticultural heritage. They focus on reviving old, dry-farmed vineyards, some over a century old, cultivating indigenous and lesser-known grape varieties such as Misión (Listán Prieto), Rosa del Peru (Moscatel Negro), and Tempranillo. Bichi's approach emphasizes organic and biodynamic farming practices, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and aging in neutral vessels, avoiding filtration and fining to preserve the wine's authentic expression. Their distinctive labels, featuring whimsical illustrations of luchadores (Mexican wrestlers), capture the brand's playful spirit and cultural roots. Bichi's wines have garnered international acclaim for their vibrant character and unique representation of Mexican terroir, positioning them as a leading force in the country's natural wine movement.

Wine region

Tecate, Mexico

Mexico has a centuries-long history of winemaking that has mostly gone under the radar. Spanish conquistadores planted vines in the early 1500s, before both Chile and Argentina, and Baja California represents about 90% of the vines in the entire country due to the ideal climate and geography. Brothers Noel & Jair Tellez, with the help of Chilean (by way of Burgundy) winemaker Louis-Antoine Luyt, are producing amazingly fresh and energetic wines from very old, recently recovered vineyards of Misión (aka Listán Prieto), Rosa del Peru (aka Moscatel Negro), Tempranillo and Carinena, among other varieties.
