Tasting notes

Hunny Bunny pulls off a genuinely rare trick: it drinks like a chilled red but has the structure and pepper of a real Blaufränkisch. Just 3 days of whole-cluster skin contact gives you bright sour cherry and pomegranate with almost no tannin grip, held together by Burgenland's naturally firm acidity.

  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; whole-cluster 3-day maceration; spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel; aged in neutral acacia wood casks; unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfites
  • Serving: Serve at 54-58F; no decant needed; drink within 2-3 years
  • Pairing: Pasta with tomato sauce, grilled salmon, Camembert, mushrooms, charcuterie
  • Similar To: For fans of light Gamay or Schiava who want higher acidity and a peppery edge

Hunny Bunny is 100% Blaufränkisch grown on sand and limestone soils in Gols, within the Neusiedlersee region of Burgenland. Judith Beck hand-harvests the fruit from her biodynamically farmed vineyards, then whole-cluster macerates for 3 days before spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged in neutral acacia wood casks, then bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfites.

The result sits somewhere between a light red and a dark rosé: pale cherry in the glass, with bright acidity and barely any tannin from the short skin contact. Aromas lean toward sour cherry, raspberry, and pomegranate, with a peppery lift that is characteristic of Blaufränkisch. The palate is juicy, direct, and clean through the finish.

Judith Beck is a member of both the Pannobile winemakers association and the respekt-BIODYN biodynamic certification body. She uses herbal tea sprays, her own compost, and follows biodynamic calendar timing across the 13.5-hectare estate. No inoculated yeasts, no fining agents, and minimal to no sulfur across the range.

Serve slightly chilled at around 55F. Works well with pasta in tomato sauce, grilled salmon, Camembert, or mushroom dishes. The high acidity cuts through fat and holds up to anything with a bit of richness or umami.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Judith Beck

The Beck family estate in Gols was founded by Matthias and Christine Beck in 1976. Judith Beck made her first vintage in 2001 and took full control of the winery in 2004. Before returning to Gols, she studied at the Klosterneuburg Viticulture College and worked harvests at Château Cos d'Estournel in Bordeaux, Braida in Piedmont, and Errazuriz in Chile.

In 2007, Judith transitioned the entire 13.5-hectare estate to biodynamic farming, joining the respekt-BIODYN certification body, which certified her first biodynamic vintage in 2010. Farming practices include cultivating grass between vine rows, using estate-made compost, applying herbal tea sprays from yarrow, nettle, and horsetail, and following biodynamic calendar timing. She is also a member of Pannobile, the regional association of quality-focused growers in Gols.

In the cellar, Judith uses only indigenous yeasts, with no fining or filtration. Sulfur additions are zero to minimal depending on the wine. Her portfolio ranges from early-drinking natural reds like Hunny Bunny and Beck Ink to more structured single-variety wines and the experimental Bambule range, which includes skin-contact whites, pet-nats, and zero-sulfur reds aged in amphora and old acacia casks.

Wine region

Burgenland, Austria

Burgenland sits in easternmost Austria, bordered by Hungary to the east and the foothills of the Alps to the west. The Neusiedlersee sub-region runs along the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl, the largest steppe lake in Central Europe. The lake is no more than 1.8 meters deep and acts as a thermal reservoir, storing solar heat during the day and releasing it at night, moderating what is otherwise a strongly continental Pannonian climate with hot, dry summers and cold winters.

The Neusiedlersee DAC, established for Zweigelt-based reds from the 2012 release, covers roughly 6,675 hectares of vineyard. Gols, in the northern part of the region, is the area's main wine town and sits on sandy loam and gravel soils with limestone beneath. Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, and St. Laurent are the dominant red varieties. The flat terrain and lake humidity create conditions favorable for botrytis in autumn, but in Gols the better-drained plateau and slope sites produce fresh, fruit-driven reds with firm natural acidity.
