Description

Château Falfas Les Demoiselles de Falfas hails from the Côtes de Bourg appellation in Bordeaux, France. The estate's 20 hectares of vineyards are on clay-limestone soils, ideal for cultivating Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. This cuvée is predominantly Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from younger vines. Vineyard practices adhere to biodynamic principles, including manual harvesting and using draught horses. In the cellar, fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is aged in tanks to preserve its fresh, fruit-forward character. Bottling is done without fining or filtration, and no sulfites are added, aligning with natural winemaking philosophies.

Why we like it

Les Demoiselles de Falfas has a deep ruby hue. The nose offers aromas of fresh blackberries, cedar, and a hint of incense. The palate is dry and full-bodied, with flavors of crushed blackberries and mulling spices, leading to a velvety finish.

Producer profile

Chateau le Bergey

Château Falfas, established in 1612, is a historic estate in the Côtes de Bourg appellation on the right bank of Bordeaux. The château's vineyards span over 20 hectares, situated on rolling hills with clay-rich topsoils atop a calcareous base, providing an ideal terroir for viticulture. The estate cultivates several grape varieties, including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. In 1988, John Cochran III and his wife Véronique, daughter of renowned biodynamic consultant François Bouchet, acquired Château Falfas and transitioned the vineyard to biodynamic practices. This approach emphasizes ecological harmony and minimal intervention, enhancing the vineyard's unique terroir expression. Château Falfas produces several cuvées, notably their flagship red wine, known for its complexity and aging potential. The wines are crafted with a focus on traditional methods, including hand harvesting and natural fermentation, resulting in a product that reflects the estate's rich history and commitment to sustainable viticulture.

Wine region

Bordeaux, France

Bordeaux is one of the most renowned wine regions in the world. It is located in the southwest of France. The Gironde River divides the region into the Left Bank and the Right Bank, each with its distinct wine characteristics.

The Left Bank includes the Médoc and Graves regions. The Médoc is famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines. Notable appellations here include Pauillac, Margaux, and Saint-Estèphe. Graves, located south of Médoc, is known for red and white wines, with Pessac-Léognan being a key appellation.

The Right Bank is home to the Libournais region. The most famous areas are Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. Saint-Émilion is known for its Merlot-dominant wines, often blended with Cabernet Franc. Pomerol, though smaller, is highly esteemed for its rich, full-bodied Merlot wines.

Between the two banks lies the Entre-Deux-Mers area, known for its dry white wines. The name means "between two seas," referring to the Garonne and Dordogne rivers that define the region. This area produces Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle grapes.

Bordeaux's climate is maritime, influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. This results in mild winters and warm summers, with ample rainfall that supports viticulture. The region's soils vary, with gravel, limestone, clay, and sand contributing to the diversity of its wines.

Bordeaux wines are often blends. Red Bordeaux, also known as Claret, typically combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. White Bordeaux wines may blend Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle.

The region is also famous for its sweet wines, particularly from Sauternes and Barsac. These wines are made from grapes affected by noble rot, which concentrates their sugars and flavors. Bordeaux has a long history of wine production, dating back to Roman times. It continues to be a benchmark for quality and style in the wine world.
