Tasting notes

This is Aligoté handled with the same seriousness Vauthier brings to his Pinot Noir parcels — unfined, unfiltered, low sulfur, with citrus and green apple on the nose and a saline mineral pull on the finish. At this price point in Burgundy, there is very little that competes with it on energy and precision.

Nicolas Vauthier sources Aligoté grapes from organically farmed vineyards across northern Burgundy's Yonne department, working with growers in appellations like Chitry, Irancy, and Coulanges-la-Vineuse. The vines grow on limestone soils layered with marl and clay, the same geology that gives this corner of Burgundy its characteristic mineral tension. Vauthier operates as a négociant, hand-selecting parcels and bringing in his own harvest crew to control fruit quality.

In the cellar, the wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts in a combination of vats and barrels, then bottled unfined and unfiltered with little to no added sulfur. No fining agents, no commercial yeasts, no intervention beyond what the fruit requires. The approach follows the model Vauthier absorbed while working under Philippe Pacalet in Beaune before launching Vini Viti Vinci in 2009.

The 2019 vintage in Burgundy was warm and dry, producing ripe, concentrated fruit with good natural sugar. For Aligoté in the northern Yonne, that warmth translated into fruit that is rounder than usual without sacrificing the variety's defining acidity. The result is a wine with more texture than a typical Bourgogne Aligoté, while still showing the citrus and mineral character the grape is known for.

Bourgogne Aligoté is Burgundy's second white grape, a natural crossing of Pinot Noir and Gouais Blanc — a sibling of Chardonnay. It received its own regional AOC in 1937, covering communes across the Yonne, Côte-d'Or, and Saône-et-Loire departments. Aligoté ripens early, produces wines with naturally high acidity, and is typically planted on higher slopes and cooler sites where Chardonnay would not thrive.

Aligoté's lean, high acidity makes it a natural match for oysters and other raw shellfish, where the saline mineral finish mirrors the brine. Works equally well with grilled white fish, goat cheese, or gougères. Pour it alongside a simple green salad with vinaigrette and it will not disappoint.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Vini Viti Vinci

Nicolas Vauthier, known among friends as Kikro, co-founded Aux Crieurs de Vin in Troyes in 1998, one of France's first dedicated natural wine bars. For more than a decade he championed growers who worked without intervention, introducing their bottles to curious drinkers. He studied oenology in Belleville and worked at wineries in Washington State, an experience that showed him the industrial end of the wine spectrum and clarified what he wanted to avoid.

In 2009, Vauthier sold his stake in Aux Crieurs de Vin and launched Vini Viti Vinci in Avallon, in the Yonne department of northern Burgundy. Before starting, he spent time working with Philippe Pacalet in Beaune, absorbing the négociant model of sourcing grapes from selected growers rather than owning vineyards. Vauthier operates the same way: he sources fruit from trusted organic and biodynamic farmers across overlooked appellations including Chitry, Irancy, Epineuil, and Coulanges-la-Vineuse, all sitting on limestone-rich soils in a cooler northern climate.

In the cellar, Vauthier works with indigenous yeasts, avoids added inputs, and bottles without fining or filtration. Sulfur additions are minimal to none. His Aligoté is fermented in a combination of vats and barrels. The philosophy is consistent across the range: let the vintage and the terroir lead, and intervene as little as possible.

Wine region

Burgundy, France

Burgundy sits in east-central France and spans five main wine-growing zones from the Yonne department in the north down to the Mâconnais in the south. The northern reaches, including areas around Avallon, Chablis, Irancy, Chitry, and Epineuil, have a cooler, more continental climate with oceanic influence. Cold winters, spring frost risk, and warm summers are the norm. Even in hot vintages, the northern Yonne retains freshness that the southern zones can lose.

Bourgogne Aligoté AOC is a regional appellation established in 1937 covering nearly 300 communes across all of Burgundy's departments — 54 in the Yonne, 91 in the Côte-d'Or, and 154 in Saône-et-Loire. Aligoté is planted primarily on higher slopes and cooler sites on limestone soils combined with marl and clay, as the prime mid-slope land is reserved for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The grape is a natural crossing of Pinot Noir and Gouais Blanc, making it a genetic sibling of Chardonnay. It produces wines with naturally high acidity and a profile centered on citrus, green apple, and limestone-driven minerality. Bouzeron, in the Côte Chalonnaise, holds the only communal-level AOC dedicated exclusively to Aligoté, recognized in 1998.
