Full Body

Full-bodied natural wines offer concentration, depth, and structure without the heaviness that can come from conventional manipulation. Think ripe Nebbiolo from Barolo, powerful Syrah from the northern Rhone, structured Grenache from Priorat, and age-worthy Cabernet Franc from the Loire. These are wines with weight and presence on the palate, all tannin, extract, and long finishes, yet many stay bright and alive thanks to careful farming and native-yeast fermentation.

Read more about full-bodied natural wine

Full-bodied wine is defined by weight and structure on the palate: more tannin, more extract, more length, and the depth to age. In the natural wine world that structure comes from the vineyard and the vintage rather than from heavy oak or manipulation in the cellar. The classic grapes are here in force: Nebbiolo from Barolo and Barbaresco, Syrah from the northern Rhone, Grenache-led blends from the south of France and Priorat, and Cabernet Franc from the Loire, along with old-vine field blends built to last.

What separates these wines from conventional blockbusters is freshness. Even at full weight they keep acidity and lift, so they feel alive rather than jammy. Many are farmed organically or biodynamically and fermented with native yeasts, and the best of them reward patience, softening and gaining complexity over five, ten, or more years in the cellar.

Serve full-bodied reds at cool room temperature and decant the younger, more tannic bottles an hour or two ahead. They call for hearty food: roast and grilled meats, braises, mushrooms, and aged cheese. For more age-worthy bottles, see our Cellar Selection and Classic collections.

Full body describes weight and structure on the palate: more tannin, more extract, more length, and usually the depth to age. In natural wine that structure comes from the vineyard and vintage rather than from heavy oak or cellar manipulation, so the wines stay fresh even at full weight.

The classics are here: Nebbiolo from Barolo and Barbaresco, Syrah from the northern Rhone, Grenache-led blends from southern France and Priorat, Cabernet Franc from the Loire, and old-vine field blends built to last.

Many do. The best combine real structure with the freshness that low-intervention farming preserves, so they soften and gain complexity over five, ten, or more years. Product notes indicate which bottles reward cellaring.

Younger, more tannic bottles benefit from an hour or two in a decanter, which softens the tannin and opens the aromatics. Older, mature wines usually need less air, so decant them closer to serving.

These wines call for hearty food: roast and grilled meats, braises and stews, mushrooms, and aged hard cheese. Their structure and acidity cut through rich, fatty dishes.
