Product description

Pierre Frick Auxerrois 2023 comes from one of Alsace's most pioneering biodynamic estates, where twelve generations of the Frick family have cultivated vines in Pfaffenheim. This "Pur Vin" bottling features 100% Pinot Auxerrois grown on calcareous soils with limestone and yellow sandstone components. Jean-Pierre and Chantal Frick hand-harvest the grapes, then ferment exclusively with indigenous yeasts—no chaptalization, no acidity correction, no temperature control. Pierre Frick Auxerrois 2023 ages on fine lees in century-old oak foudres and is bottled without fining, filtration, or added sulfites, containing less than 10 mg/L total SO2.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Pierre Frick

Domaine Pierre Frick has been connected to the vineyards of Pfaffenheim for twelve generations, making it one of Alsace's most historically rooted estates. Today Jean-Pierre Frick, along with his wife Chantal and son Thomas, tends 12 hectares of vines across a dozen distinct terroirs spanning 15 kilometers between Colmar and Guebwiller.

The Frick family's commitment to ecological farming predates the modern natural wine movement by decades. Pierre and Annette Frick converted the estate to organic viticulture in 1970—a radical decision at a time when chemical agriculture dominated French wine regions. Jean-Pierre pushed further in 1981, adopting biodynamic practices and achieving Demeter certification in 1986, making Pierre Frick one of just three French wine estates to receive official organic recognition from the state that year (alongside Nicolas Joly and Eugène Meyer).

The first sulfite-free wines appeared in 1999, and today approximately 90% of production is bottled without added sulfites. Jean-Pierre's approach remains uncompromising: manual harvest, indigenous yeast fermentation, no chaptalization, no acidity correction, no temperature control. Wines age on fine lees in century-old oak foudres, developing complexity through time rather than intervention.

The estate holds vineyards in three Grand Cru sites—Steinert in Pfaffenheim, Vorbourg in Rouffach, and Eichberg in Eguisheim—alongside several distinguished lieu-dit parcels. Jean-Pierre is recognized as one of "Les Quatre Mousquetaires" of Alsace natural wine, the founding figures who established the region's vibrant natural wine culture. He also co-founded the Foire Eco Bio Alsace in 1982, an ecological fair that now draws 45,000 annual visitors.

Beyond winemaking, Jean-Pierre and Chantal remain active environmental advocates, campaigning on issues from GMO agriculture to nuclear power while maintaining open doors for fellow vignerons seeking guidance on biodynamic conversion.

Wine region

Alsace, France

Alsace occupies a narrow strip along France's northeastern border with Germany, sheltered by the Vosges Mountains to the west and the Rhine River to the east. This unique geography creates one of France's driest climates—the Vosges create a rain shadow effect that results in abundant sunshine and low precipitation. The combination of warmth and protection produces aromatic white wines unlike anywhere else in France.

The village of Pfaffenheim sits in the Haut-Rhin department, the southern half of Alsace where many of the region's most prestigious vineyards are found. Viticulture here dates to Roman times, with vine cultivation documented for over two millennia. The soils around Pfaffenheim vary dramatically over short distances—limestone, marl, sandstone, and clay intermingle across the slopes rising toward the Vosges foothills.

Alsace operates under three main appellations: Alsace AOC for varietal wines, Alsace Grand Cru for site-specific bottlings from 51 designated vineyards, and Crémant d'Alsace for traditional-method sparkling wines. Unlike most French wine regions, Alsace labels wines by grape variety rather than vineyard name, though Grand Cru and lieu-dit designations increasingly appear on bottles from quality-focused producers.

The region cultivates both aromatic varieties—Gewürztraminer, Muscat, Riesling—and the Pinot family, including Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and the closely related Auxerrois. This last grape, native to Lorraine, produces wines of finesse and subtle fruitiness that complement rather than compete with food. Alsace now claims over 25% of vineyards farmed organically or biodynamically, among the highest percentages in France—a movement pioneered by estates like Domaine Pierre Frick.
