Product description

Alessandro Viola Sinfonia di Rosso 2021 is a natural red wine crafted from 100% Nerello Mascalese, a grape native to Sicily. Grown organically on clay soils in the Pietra Rinosa area near Alcamo at 220 meters elevation, the fruit benefits from cool sea breezes off the Gulf of Castellammare. Alessandro Viola ferments spontaneously in stainless steel with extended skin contact, then ages the wine for seven months in neutral 500-liter chestnut barrels. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites, Alessandro Viola Sinfonia di Rosso 2021 reaches 14% alcohol and carries the Terre Siciliane IGT designation.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Alessandro Viola

Alessandro Viola operates a 7-hectare estate near Alcamo in the province of Trapani, on Sicily's northwestern coast. A trained agronomist and oenologist with degrees in both disciplines, Viola gained experience across Italy—including stints in Piedmont and on Etna—before returning to his native Sicily in the late 1990s to focus on his family's land.

His timing coincided with a period when Sicilian winemaking leaned heavily on technology and synthetic inputs. Viola moved in the opposite direction, developing what he calls a "subtractive approach": removing interventions rather than adding them, letting nature guide the process. By the early 2000s, he had obtained organic certification, though his methods have always extended beyond the minimum requirements.

The estate comprises two vineyard sites: one in Pietra Rinosa at 220 meters elevation, another higher on Mount Bonifato reaching 400-700 meters. Plantings focus on indigenous varieties—Grillo, Catarratto, Nero d'Avola, and Nerello Mascalese—that Viola considers essential to expressing Sicilian terroir authentically. His brother Aldo Viola also makes wine in Alcamo, though the two work independently with distinct styles shaped by their different soil types and winemaking philosophies.

In the cellar, Viola ferments spontaneously with native yeasts and ages wines in a combination of stainless steel, fiberglass, and chestnut barrels depending on the cuvée. All wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal or no added sulfites. The Sinfonia di Rosso showcases his ability with Nerello Mascalese, a variety he sources locally rather than from Etna—a subtle distinction that gives the wine its own character.

Wine region

Sicily, Italy

Sicily, the Mediterranean's largest island, holds one of Italy's most ancient winemaking traditions—over 2,500 years of continuous viticulture. The island's sheer diversity makes it a world unto itself: coastal plains, volcanic slopes, mountainous interiors, and everything in between create dozens of distinct microclimates within a single region.

The western coast around Alcamo, where Alessandro Viola farms, differs markedly from the volcanic terrain of Etna. Here, the landscape rises from the Gulf of Castellammare into the hills surrounding Mount Bonifato, where limestone, sand, and clay soils dominate. Cool, humid sea breezes moderate the Mediterranean heat, extending the growing season and preserving acidity in the grapes—conditions that favor aromatic white varieties like Catarratto and Grillo, though red grapes including Nerello Mascalese also thrive.

The Alcamo DOC was historically dedicated to white wines, only expanding to include reds in 1999. This heritage reflects the area's natural affinity for fresh, mineral-driven styles rather than the powerful, sun-drenched reds Sicily is often known for. Vineyards in the Pietra Rinosa district climb to elevations between 220 and 700 meters, where altitude provides additional cooling and diurnal temperature variation.

Sicily's native grape varieties remain central to its identity. Nerello Mascalese, best known from Etna, produces wines of surprising elegance—pale in color, aromatic, with fine tannins often compared to Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo. Grown in western Sicily's clay soils rather than volcanic ash, the variety expresses differently: earthier, herbaceous, distinctly Mediterranean.

A growing community of natural winemakers has established Sicily as a destination for low-intervention wines, drawn by indigenous varieties, affordable land, and a climate that supports organic farming year-round.
