Tasting notes

Rosso de Veo is Sagrantino without the weight of the full DOCG designation: the younger vines from the high-elevation Cerrete site produce a wine with the grape's characteristic powdery tannins and dark fruit intensity, but with a brightness and citrusy acidity that makes it approachable before the Pagliaro and Cerrete single-vineyard releases come around. The 40-to-50-day maceration, unfiltered bottling, and four-year aging regimen before release give it a structural depth that opens considerably with air.

  • Similar To: For fans of Barolo and Brunello who want Umbrian terroir and natural winemaking without filtration or additions

Rosso de Veo is Paolo Bea's younger-vine Sagrantino, sourced principally from the Cerrete vineyard, which sits at the highest elevation point in Montefalco between 1,300 and 1,500 feet above sea level. The soil is clay and limestone threaded with small pebbles deposited by an ancient riverbed. The wine is declassified to Umbria IGT rather than Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, a choice in keeping with the Bea family's indifference to appellation politics.

Winemaking follows the same protocol as the estate's single-vineyard Sagrantinos: fermentation with native yeasts, no temperature control, and a cuvaison of 40 to 50 days. The wine is then aged one year in stainless steel tanks, two years in large oak barrels, and one additional year in bottle before release. It is bottled unfiltered and without additions.

The 2015 vintage shows a hazy medium garnet color. The nose opens with bright cherry, crushed black cherry, dark earth, balsamic spice, and aromatic herbs. On the palate, powdery tannins wrap around a core of red and blue fruit cut through with citrusy acidity and a saline mineral thread. The finish is long and grippy, with fruit concentration that rewards extended decanting or further cellaring.

Drinking window per Vinous (93 points, Eric Guido, August 2021): 2022 to 2032. Expect significant sediment; decanting is strongly recommended.

The dense tannin and high alcohol call for fatty, protein-rich dishes: braised lamb shoulder, wild boar with lentils, or aged Pecorino di Fossa. Umbrian black truffle dishes, particularly tagliatelle al tartufo nero, work well with the wine's earthy and herbal register. Avoid lean fish or delicate preparations, which will be overwhelmed.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Paolo Bea

The Bea family's presence in Montefalco is documented in local archives as early as 1500. The estate, Azienda Agricola Paolo Bea, operates as a classic Italian fattoria: 15 total hectares, of which 5 are planted to vines, 2 to olive trees, and the remainder to fruit, vegetables, and grains. Sagrantino covers 60% of the vineyard surface. Paolo Bea began bottling wine in 1980. His son Giuseppe manages the vineyards and son Giampiero oversees vinification and all commercial operations.

Farming at Paolo Bea is organic and biodynamic. No synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers are used. The estate uses copper-sulfate treatments, maintains cover crops between vine rows, and plows annually. Lunar cycles inform timing decisions in both vineyard and cellar. Giampiero Bea co-founded Vini Veri, a consortium of producers committed to natural methods in vineyard and cellar.

In the cellar, grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks without temperature control. Cuvaison runs 35 to 60 days depending on the wine. Wines spend time in stainless steel, then in large oak barrels (described at the estate as Slavonian oak by multiple sources), and finally in bottle before release. Nothing is filtered. Bea releases wines only when he considers them ready, meaning current releases lag behind most other Italian producers by several years.

Wine region

Umbria, Italy

Montefalco sits in the province of Perugia in central Umbria, a landlocked region bordered by Tuscany, Lazio, and Le Marche. The medieval town itself sits at approximately 470 meters elevation and is known locally as the Balcony of Umbria for its views over the surrounding plain. The climate is predominantly continental, with warm, dry summers critical for ripening Sagrantino's thick skins, cold winters, and significant diurnal temperature variation during the growing season that helps preserve natural acidity. Evening breezes descending from the Apennines provide additional cooling.

The zone produces two DOCG wines: Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, which requires 100% Sagrantino and a minimum 37 months of total aging, and Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG. Montefalco Rosso DOC, awarded in 1979, requires 60 to 70% Sangiovese with 10 to 15% Sagrantino and is a more accessible entry point to the region. Soils in the Montefalco appellation are predominantly calcareous clay in four general types, ranging from alluvial pebble soils to lake sands and clays to calcified marls. Sagrantino, the appellation's signature grape, is documented in the area since the late 16th century and carries the highest tannin and polyphenol concentration of any major red grape variety.
