Product description

Frank Cornelissen Magma Etna Rosso 2019 is the estate's "Grand Vin," crafted from 100% Nerello Mascalese grown in Contrada Barbabecchi at 870-910 meters elevation on Mount Etna's northern slopes. The ungrafted, pre-phylloxeric vines were planted around 1910 and trained in traditional alberello formation on volcanic soils. Frank Cornelissen Magma Etna Rosso 2019 undergoes 50 days of skin contact with spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts, followed by 18 months aging in neutral epoxy tanks and an additional 18 months in bottle. Only approximately 2,000 bottles were produced, as Magma is made exclusively in vintages achieving optimal phenolic ripeness.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Frank Cornelissen

Frank Cornelissen is a Belgian-born winemaker who established his estate on Mount Etna's northern slopes in 2001, beginning with just 0.40 hectares of vines. The son of a wine broker, Cornelissen grew up immersed in fine wine—his first purchases included a case of 1972 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. After working as an importer specializing in rare Burgundy and Bordeaux, a transformative encounter with Georgian wines in the 1990s redirected his understanding toward minimal-intervention winemaking.

He chose Etna deliberately, drawn by the volcanic terroir's capacity to produce profoundly mineral wines from Nerello Mascalese—a variety he describes as falling between Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo. His estate now spans approximately 24 hectares between 600 and 1,000 meters elevation, with 13 hectares of old alberello-trained vines and additional plantings in modern rows. Olive groves, fruit trees, and beehives occupy the remaining land, reducing monoculture and fostering biodiversity.

Magma represents the pinnacle of Cornelissen's production—his "Grand Vin" from Contrada Barbabecchi, where ungrafted centenarian vines planted around 1910 capture the morning sun at 910 meters elevation. The wine is made only in exceptional vintages when phenolic ripeness is achieved. Production is limited to approximately 2,000 bottles annually.

Cornelissen's philosophy centers on observation rather than intervention. He avoids vineyard treatments when possible and vinifies without additives. Early vintages were deliberately experimental—he once described his goal as creating "liquid stone." His approach has evolved toward greater balance, with wines now showing fruit alongside the signature volcanic minerality. Fermentations proceed spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in neutral epoxy tanks, and bottling occurs without fining.

Wine region

Sicily, Italy

Mount Etna dominates Sicily's northeastern landscape, Europe's tallest and most active volcano rising to 3,357 meters. The wine region occupies the mountain's slopes between 400 and 1,100 meters, where vineyards have been cultivated for millennia on terraces carved from successive lava flows. This volcanic terrain produces wines unlike any other in Italy, with growing conditions that differ dramatically from Sicily's hot coastal zones.

The soils consist primarily of decomposed basalt, pumice, mineral ash, and solidified lava—deposits that vary considerably between the numerous contrade (vineyard districts) that define Etna's viticultural identity. The northern valley, where Frank Cornelissen's Barbabecchi vineyard is located near Solicchiata, is particularly prized. This area is now compared to Burgundy's Côte de Nuits or Piedmont's Barolo zone for its capacity to produce site-specific wines of singular character.

Altitude plays a crucial role in Etna viticulture. Vineyards at 900+ meters experience significant diurnal temperature variation—warm days followed by cool nights—that preserves natural acidity while achieving full aromatic development. The 2019 vintage brought a concentration that Cornelissen described as "Pinot-ish," with cool weather before harvest contributing depth and complexity while keeping alcohol levels below 14%.

Nerello Mascalese is the dominant red variety, often described as falling stylistically between Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo—transparent in color yet structured and age-worthy. Many of Etna's oldest vines remain ungrafted on their own roots; phylloxera never established in the porous volcanic soils. Traditional alberello (bush vine) training predominates, with some vineyards dating to the early 1900s when Etna wines were exported to supplement phylloxera-ravaged Burgundy harvests.

The Etna DOC was established in 1968, though many producers bottle under the Terre Siciliane IGT for greater winemaking flexibility.
