Tasting notes

After six months of skin contact in buried qvevri, this Rkatsiteli lands somewhere between a structured white and a light red: dried apricot and orange peel on the nose, gripping tea tannins on the palate, and enough acidity to cut through rich food. The 1975 vines in Artana give the wine a depth and textural density that younger-vine examples rarely match.

This is 100% Rkatsiteli from Artana's estate vineyards in the village of Artana, on the southern slopes of the Caucasus mountains in Kakheti, eastern Georgia. The Rkatsiteli vines were planted in 1975. Grapes are harvested by hand in late September, pressed directly into qvevri without stems, and fermented spontaneously using native yeasts. The wine undergoes six months of skin contact in buried clay qvevri, which pulls the deep amber color and phenolic grip characteristic of the Kakhetian style. No sulfites are added and the wine is bottled unfiltered.

Qvevri winemaking is the oldest continuous winemaking method in the world and was inscribed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013. In the Kakhetian tradition, white grapes ferment with their skins, seeds, and sometimes stems sealed inside the buried vessel through winter, then are racked into a second clean qvevri in spring. The result is structurally closer to a red wine than a conventional white: firm tannins, low residual sugar, and a color that ranges from golden copper to deep amber.

Rkatsiteli is one of Georgia's oldest documented grape varieties, with origins traced to eastern Georgia dating back at least 3,000 years. In its qvevri-fermented, skin-contact form, the grape produces a full-bodied wine with dried apricot, orange peel, walnut, and tea tannins. The wine is dry, with residual sugar under 1 g/L, and alcohol at 13.2% ABV.

Artana Wines was founded in 2014 by Anastasia Akhvlediani and Mariam Palavandishvili, grandchildren of Dimitri Rcheulishvili, who is credited with introducing Cabernet Sauvignon to Georgia. The winery farms its Artana vineyards using organic and biodynamic practices (uncertified) and produces wines without additives or fining agents under the gVINO label.

The grippy tannins and savory profile make this a natural match for roasted lamb, khinkali dumplings, aged sheep's milk cheeses, and walnut-based sauces common in Georgian cuisine. It holds up well alongside dishes with bold spice or fat, where a conventional white would be overwhelmed. Also works with oily fish like mackerel or grilled sardines.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Artana

Artana Wines was founded in 2014 in the village of Artana, Kakheti, by Anastasia Akhvlediani and Mariam Palavandishvili, grandchildren of Dimitri (Tito) Rcheulishvili. Dimitri Rcheulishvili was an engineer who built railway infrastructure in Manchuria and eastern Russia in the early 20th century and is historically associated with introducing several foreign grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, to Georgia. The Rcheulishvili family's connection to Artana village dates to a longstanding friendship with the Karalashvili and Simashvili families, who were historically known in Kakheti for wine production. The family acquired vineyards in Artana in 2007 and formally established the winery in 2014.

The estate's Rkatsiteli vines were planted in 1975, with Saperavi added in 2006 and 2015. The vineyards are farmed using organic and biodynamic practices, though without formal certification. Grapes are dry-farmed and hand-harvested. Anastasia Akhvlediani also co-founded the Natural Chacha Association to promote traditional Georgian grape spirits.

All wines are produced using traditional qvevri fermentation without additives, fining agents, or filtration. Rkatsiteli is pressed into qvevri without stems, fermented spontaneously with native yeasts, and macerated on skins for six months before racking and further aging in clean qvevri. Sulfite additions are minimal, with total SO2 measured at 26 mg/L on comparable vintages. The wines are bottled under the gVINO label and are suitable for vegans.

Wine region

Kakheti, Georgia

Kakheti is Georgia's primary wine-producing region, accounting for approximately 65-70% of the country's total vineyard area and wine output. It occupies the Alazani River valley in eastern Georgia, flanked to the north by the Greater Caucasus and to the south by the Tsiv-Gombori range. The climate is continental, with hot summers and temperate winters, and the Alazani plain's alluvial soils support dense plantings of indigenous varieties. The village of Artana sits on the southern slopes of the Caucasus within this region.

Kakheti contains 14 of Georgia's 18 Protected Designations of Origin (PDOs), including Tsinandali, Gurjaani, Napareuli, Mukuzani, Teliani, and Kindzmarauli, among others. The most widely planted varieties are Rkatsiteli and Saperavi, alongside indigenous grapes such as Kisi, Mtsvane Kakhuri, and Khikhvi. The region is the historical home of the Kakhetian or 'eastern' style of winemaking, where white grapes are fermented and aged on their full complement of skins, seeds, and stems in buried qvevri for four to six months, producing structured amber wines with firm tannins and complex dried-fruit aromatics.
