Product description

Pierre Frick Gewürztraminer 2022 is a profound, biodynamic expression of Alsace, produced by the pioneering Frick family in Pfaffenheim. This orange wine is crafted from 100% Gewürztraminer grapes harvested manually from calcareous and marl-sandstone soils. The producer, Pierre Frick, employs a low-intervention approach where the grapes undergo seven to ten days of whole-cluster maceration before pressing. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in large, century-old oak foudres. Pierre Frick Gewürztraminer 2022 is bottled without filtration, fining, or added sulfites, preserving the raw intensity and aromatic complexity of the varietal.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Pierre Frick

Pierre Frick is a benchmark name in the international natural wine community, representing the twelfth generation of his family to cultivate vines in Pfaffenheim. Alongside his wife, Chantal, and son, Thomas, Pierre manages 12 hectares of biodynamic vineyards. The estate was a true pioneer of the movement, converting to organic farming in 1970 and becoming Demeter-certified for biodynamics in 1981. This long-term commitment to soil health and biodiversity has resulted in vines that are remarkably resilient and balanced, requiring no synthetic inputs or chemical interventions.

The winemaking at the Frick estate is guided by the philosophy of "non-action," in which the goal is to allow the wine to reach its own equilibrium. In the cellar, they use large, 80- to 100-year-old oak foudres that allow gentle oxygen exchange without imparting dominant wood flavors. Since 1999, the estate has produced many of its cuvées entirely without added sulfur. Another signature of the estate is the use of stainless steel crown caps instead of traditional corks for many bottlings, a decision made in 2002 to ensure bottle consistency and prevent cork taint while allowing for a slow, reductive aging process.

Beyond their iconic Gewürztraminer, the producer offers a wide range of varietal expressions. Their portfolio includes the Pierre Frick Pinot Gris Grand Cru Vorbourg and the vibrant Pierre Frick Pinot Noir Physalis. Known for their uncompromising quality and technical precision, these wines are frequently found among the best sellers natural wine. Every bottle from Pierre Frick serves as a transparent vessel for the energy of the Alsatian soil and the family’s centuries-old viticultural heritage.

Wine region

Alsace, France

Alsace stretches along France's northeastern border with Germany, sheltered by the Vosges Mountains and defined by an extraordinary diversity of soil types. Within this 120-kilometer vineyard corridor, Riesling reigns as the region's most celebrated grape variety—prized for its ability to translate terroir into the glass with remarkable precision.

The marl and loess soils referenced in this cuvée represent two distinct geological layers common throughout southern Alsace. Marl—a calcareous clay—provides water retention and mineral complexity, while loess is a fine, pale-yellow silt deposited by winds during the quaternary Ice Age. This loess layer blankets many lower-slope vineyards, contributing to wines of particular finesse and aromatic intensity.

Pfaffenheim sits in the Haut-Rhin department, approximately 15 kilometers south of Colmar. The village has cultivated vines since Roman times, and its diverse terroirs support both aromatic varieties and Pinot Noir. The Vosges Mountains create a rain shadow that makes Alsace one of France's driest wine regions, with annual rainfall around 500mm—conditions that favor slow, even ripening while preserving natural acidity.

Orange wines—white grapes vinified with extended skin contact—represent a growing category within Alsace's natural wine movement. Producers like Pierre Frick began experimenting with maceration techniques in the 2010s, drawing inspiration from Georgian qvevri traditions and Italian skin-contact wines. The technique extracts phenolic compounds, tannins, and color from the grape skins, creating wines of deeper hue and textural complexity than conventionally pressed whites.
