Tasting notes

At 12% ABV, this is Cinsault at its most transparent: crunchy red cherry, fresh raspberry, violet florals, and a whisper of black pepper with no heaviness at the finish. It proves Languedoc can do light and precise just as convincingly as it does bold and extracted.

On Verra La Mer is a 100% Cinsault from Julie Brosselin of Les Cigales dans la Fourmilière, made from organically farmed vines in and around the village of Montpeyroux in the Hérault department of Languedoc. The vineyards sit on clay and limestone soils at the foot of the Larzac plateau, roughly 30km from the Mediterranean coast. Cool northerly winds and significant diurnal temperature variation keep the fruit fresh and the alcohol moderate — this comes in at just 12%.

In the cellar, the grapes are fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, macerated with the skins, and aged in old oak barrels. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfites. That restraint shows: this is a Languedoc red that drinks nothing like the region's reputation for warm, alcoholic, extracted wines.

Cinsault rarely gets the solo spotlight in the south of France, where it is almost always blended with Grenache, Syrah, or Carignan. Here it is given the full stage: light-bodied and crunchy, with lifted red fruit, a violet note on the nose, and a faint peppery finish. It has the transparency and food-friendliness of a good Gamay, but with a distinctly Mediterranean herbal undercurrent.

Julie Brosselin and Ivo Ferreira formed Les Cigales dans la Fourmilière in 2016, pooling vineyards that now total 10 hectares farmed organically. Julie previously co-owned Le Petit Domaine; Ivo, a Portuguese-born vigneron, worked alongside Jean-Marc Brignot in the Jura and the Amoreau family at Château Le Puy before establishing his own label, Domaine de l'Escarpolette, in 2009. They share a cellar in Montpeyroux and make wines both jointly and under separate labels.

Serve with charcuterie, rillettes, or a simple board of cured meats and olives. The low tannin and bright acidity make it a natural match for braised dishes like osso buco or slow-cooked rabbit. It also holds its own alongside grilled chicken with herbs or a tomato-based pasta.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Les Cigales dans la Fourmilière

Les Cigales dans la Fourmilière is the shared label of Julie Brosselin and Ivo Ferreira, based in the village of Montpeyroux in the Hérault. They created the joint venture in 2016, combining their separately farmed parcels into an estate that now covers 10 hectares of organic vines in and around Montpeyroux, approximately 30km from the Mediterranean Sea.

Julie previously co-owned Le Petit Domaine in the Languedoc. Ivo, originally from Portugal, trained alongside Jean-Marc Brignot in the Jura and the Amoreau family at Château Le Puy in Bordeaux before founding Domaine de l'Escarpolette in 2009. They share a cellar in Montpeyroux and work both collaboratively and independently, with each retaining final say over their own cuvées. The winery name references a La Fontaine fable about cicadas and ants, interpreted through a folk-rock lens as a reminder to make space for enjoyment alongside hard work.

Farming across the 10 hectares is organic, with no additives in the cellar. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Sulfur is used only when strictly necessary. The cellar works with a range of vessels including fiberglass tanks, 225-liter and 600-liter barrels, and large foudres. On Verra La Mer is Julie's cuvée: skin-macerated Cinsault aged in old oak barrels, bottled with no added sulfites.

Wine region

Languedoc-Roussillon, France

Languedoc-Roussillon spans from the Spanish border in the west to the edges of Provence in the east, making it France's largest wine-growing region by area. Historically associated with high-volume bulk production, the region has shifted substantially over the past 30 years toward quality-focused, often organic and natural wine production. It contains 23 AOCs and a large volume of IGP wines, with stylistic range from bold, concentrated reds to light and aromatic single-varietal bottles.

Montpeyroux sits roughly 40km northwest of Montpellier on the southern slopes of the Larzac plateau, within the Terrasses du Larzac AOC zone — described by Jancis Robinson as among the most exciting named crus in the Languedoc. Soils in the area are predominantly clay and limestone alluvium, with some stony terraces and red iron-rich ruffes. The climate is Mediterranean but tempered by cool northerly winds and significant day-to-night temperature swings that preserve acidity in the grapes. The Terrasses du Larzac AOC (created in 2005) applies to red blends of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre; single-varietal Cinsault from the area typically falls under the broader AOP Languedoc or IGP classification. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, and Cinsault are the region's core red varieties, and garrigue — the scrubby herbal vegetation of the southern French hillsides — is a recurring aromatic signature in its wines.
