Tasting notes

This is Syrah with zero red color — direct-pressed so fast that the wine comes out crystal clear, carrying only the grape's aromatic fingerprint: pomelo, citrus, spicy hazelnut, and a streak of red fruit. The concrete aging preserves a nervous, saline acidity that keeps the wine focused and food-friendly at just 12% ABV.

Le P'tit Barriot Blanc is a blanc de noir made from 100% Syrah grown in the Maury area of Roussillon, southern France. The grapes are direct-pressed immediately after harvest, with the skins removed before fermentation so no color is extracted. The result is a pale, clear wine that carries the aromatic character of Syrah without any red pigmentation.

Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in concrete vats. The wine then ages on its lees in concrete for six months before being bottled by hand, unfined and unfiltered, with only a minimal addition of sulfur at bottling. At 12% ABV, it sits on the lighter end of the spectrum for Roussillon whites.

The vineyards sit on clay, limestone, and schist soils at altitudes ranging from 120 to 450 meters in the Maury zone. These conditions produce wines with more freshness and lift than the Roussillon's typical sun-baked reds. On the nose the wine offers pomelo, fresh citrus, and a faint spicy hazelnut note that gives way to brighter fruit as it opens. The palate is tart and lightly textured, with red-fruit undertones of strawberry and pomegranate and a clean, savory finish.

Le Clot de L'Origine has been certified organic by ECOCert since 2009 and uses biodynamic practices throughout. The estate farms 10 hectares across five Roussillon villages and is recognized as a leading producer of natural wines in the region.

Serve with grilled whole fish, olive oil-dressed seafood salads, or raw oysters. The wine's savory acidity and light body also work well alongside soft goat cheese and herb-forward vegetable dishes. Chill to around 48-52F for best results.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Le Clot de L'Origine

Marc and Caroline Barriot founded Le Clot de L'Origine in Maury, Roussillon in 2004. Marc came to winemaking later in his career, training for four years in Bandol before settling in the Maury area. The estate started with a single old-vine vineyard and has grown to 10 hectares spread across five villages: Calce, Maury, Estagel, Montner, and Latour de France. Annual production averages around 35,000 bottles.

All vineyards have been farmed organically since the estate's founding and received ECOCert organic certification in 2009. Barriot applies biodynamic principles, including horse plowing and the use of homemade herbal teas and plant extracts for vine treatments. Harvesting is done by hand. The diverse plots span soils of clay, limestone, and schist across a significant range of altitudes and microclimates.

In the cellar, Barriot uses indigenous yeasts for all fermentations, adds no fining agents, does not filter, and bottles by hand. Sulfur additions are kept minimal and applied only at bottling when used at all. Le P'tit Barriot began as a red wine before Barriot shifted some production to a blanc de noir — direct-pressing the Syrah to extract juice without color. Fermentation and lees aging both take place in concrete vats. The estate is certified organic and biodynamic, and all wines are vegan.

Wine region

Roussillon, France

Roussillon occupies the far southwest corner of France, forming a natural amphitheater bounded by the Pyrenees to the west, the Corbières mountains to the north, the Albères massif to the south, and the Mediterranean coast to the east. The climate is continental-Mediterranean with strong Spanish influence — hot, dry summers moderated by altitude and the Tramontane wind, which provides natural disease pressure relief and supports the high density of organic farming in the region. Vineyard altitudes range from near sea level up to 650 meters, with the Maury sub-zone sitting on steep hillside sites between 120 and 450 meters.

Roussillon's soils are geologically diverse, including clay, limestone, black schist, marl, granite, and gravel depending on the sub-zone. The Maury area specifically sits on black schist and marl slopes, producing wines with pronounced mineral character. The main appellations for dry wines are Côtes du Roussillon and Côtes du Roussillon Villages (AOC, established 1977), Maury Sec AOC, and the IGP Côtes Catalanes, under which many of the region's most expressive natural wines are sold. Grenache Noir is the most widely planted variety, followed by Syrah and Carignan. The region was historically known for fortified Vins Doux Naturels from Maury, Banyuls, and Rivesaltes, but dry wines — especially from producers in the Agly Valley around Maury — have gained significant recognition over the past two decades.
