Tasting notes

Pale amber with a faint golden blush. The nose is fresh and lifted, with white peach, citrus zest, dried flowers, and a light herbal note. The palate is dry and animated, with bright acidity, a gentle tannic grip, and a clean mineral finish.

  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 50–54°F; no decanting required; can be served straight from the fridge and allowed to warm slightly in the glass over 10 minutes
  • Pairing: Pizza bianca with ricotta and herbs
  • Similar to: A light, early-release Fiano di Avellino with brief skin contact, or a delicate amber wine from Friuli with a similar emphasis on freshness over extraction

Cantina Giardino Glu Glu 2024 is a skin-contact white wine made from 100% Fiano grown on 90-year-old vines in the Gaia vineyard, at approximately 500 metres above sea level in Irpinia, Campania. The clay-limestone soils carry a volcanic cap. Produced by Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola at Cantina Giardino, the grapes were harvested earlier than for the Gaia cuvée, then fermented on the skins for two days before being pressed to sandstone amphorae, where the wine rested until spring. Bottled with no additions and no filtration, Cantina Giardino Glu Glu 2024 is the lighter, more approachable counterpart to the full Gaia bottling.

Pizza bianca with ricotta, grilled branzino, Japanese tempura, caprese salad, lemon risotto, sautéed clams, soft goat cheese on crostini.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Giardino

Cantina Giardino was founded in Ariano Irpino by Antonio De Gruttola and a circle of friends in the late 1990s, with the winery formally established in 2003. Antonio, who studied food technology and then specialized in viticulture and oenology, runs the project alongside his wife Daniela. Their founding motivation was practical and cultural: industrial farming and the depopulation of Irpinia had left scores of old-vine parcels without stewards, and the De Gruttolas began renting and eventually purchasing these plots to keep them in production. The name honors Professor Giardino, in whose cellar the earliest experiments took place.

Today, Cantina Giardino works approximately seven hectares of owned vines and an additional 18 hectares under lease or long-term supply agreements, spread across around 16 parcels in the province of Avellino. All farming is organic. The vineyards are worked by hand, with vines trained in the traditional Raggera Avellinese system and planted at low density alongside olive and fruit trees, as was customary in the region. Some vines are approaching or exceeding 100 years of age.

In the cantina, Antonio ferments all wines spontaneously without temperature control, using whatever indigenous yeasts are present. Aging vessels vary by wine and vintage: terracotta and sandstone amphorae (some hand-built by Daniela using soil from their own vineyards), large casks of chestnut, acacia, cherry, and mulberry, concrete, and stainless steel. Nothing is added at any stage, and sulfur is used only when Antonio judges it strictly necessary — which is rarely. No wine is fined or filtered. Each vintage's labels are original artworks by local artists, making every release visually distinct.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Irpinia is a rugged, inland territory in the province of Avellino, within Campania in southern Italy. Positioned well away from the coast and set into the Apennine mountain chain, it is one of the highest-altitude wine zones in the south of Italy, with many vineyards sitting between 400 and 700 metres above sea level. The area was shaped in part by seismic history: a major earthquake in 1980 caused significant depopulation of the region's hill towns, and many old vineyards were subsequently abandoned as rural communities declined. It is this legacy that producers like Cantina Giardino have worked to reverse, reclaiming neglected old-vine parcels and returning them to productive use.

Irpinia is home to three of Italy's most recognized southern white wine appellations. Fiano di Avellino DOCG and Greco di Tufo DOCG are both built on ancient indigenous white varieties that produce wines of real structure, acidity, and mineral complexity. Taurasi DOCG, built on Aglianico, is the dominant red appellation. In each case, the combination of altitude, continental-influenced climate with cool nights, and diverse soil profiles — ranging from clay and limestone to volcanic tuff and calcareous marl — produces wines with a tension and freshness unusual in southern Italy.

The Gaia vineyard, from which Cantina Giardino sources the Fiano for the Glu Glu 2024, is planted on clay-limestone soils with a volcanic cap at around 500 metres. This soil type is typical of the higher-altitude Irpinia hillsides, where volcanic deposits mix with calcareous bedrock to give wines both mineral salinity and structural grip. The organic farming methods used across the area — particularly on older vine parcels farmed in the traditional Raggera Avellinese training system — produce low yields and intensely flavored fruit.
